Silk Factory

After I checked in, the manager of the hostel said that he'd like to take me to a silk factory.
I told him that I could not afford to buy any silk, but he said,
"You can just see how silk is made. I think you'll find it quite interesting.
Besides, it's very close by."

So alright, I went there with him because I had wanted to take a walk about the city anyway, and I would go to the factory just as a sight seeing trip.
However, they were determined to sell me something one way or another.
It was such a hassle just to get out without buying!

シルク工場

チェックイン後、ホステルのマネージャーがシルク工場に案内すると言ってきました。
私は絹（シルク）なんて買う余裕がないと言いましたが、「どうやって絹布を作るのか見るだけでもきっと面白いと思うよ。ここから近いところだし。」
と言います。

結局、私は彼と一緒に出掛けることにしました。どっちにしろ町を散歩しようと思っていたので、観光だと考えればいいかと思ったからです。
しかし、彼らはなんとかして買わせようと必死。
何も買わずにそこを脱出するのは本当に大変でした！

Rickshaw Men

The train arrived at Varanasi around 11:00 a.m.
As usual, a couple of rickshaw drivers immediately approached me.
I had a guest house in mind but somehow the rickshaw man tried to take me to another hostel.
It's obvious he would be getting a kickback from the hostel.
I was too tired to negotiate with him, so I gave up and decided to try the hostel to which wanted to take me.
As far as that goes the hostel was mentioned in my guide book, so certainly it should be alright.

リクシャーマン

列車はベナレスに午前11時ごろに到着しました。
即座に何人かのリクシャーマンがいつものように近づいてきました。
私は行きたいと思っていたゲストハウスがあったのですが、彼はなんとかして別のホステルに連れていこうとします。
きっとそのホステルからリベートをもらっているんでしょうね。

交渉するのにも疲れてしまって、彼がいうホステルに行ってみることに。
私の持っていたガイドブックにも一応のっているし、きっと大丈夫だろうと思って。

Banana Peel // Feb 25, 1990

Next morning, I was wakened by an Indian women in her mid 40's who was in the same compartment.
She was with her kid who was about six years old.
The train stopped at a station and she showed me to the tap water which I could use to brush my teeth.
She also gave me Chai, chapati which is an Indian flat bread, curry flavored nuts and a banana.
I was very thankful for her kindness.

After I ate the banana, she gestured that I should throw the banana peel out the train window.
When I hesitated, she urged me to do it.
"When in Rome, do as the Romans do."
I threw it out and then a cow immediately came and ate it.
There were cows on the railroad track.
It was just amazing!

バナナの皮

翌朝、同じコンパートメントだった40代のインドの女性に起こされました。
彼女は6歳ぐらいの男の子と一緒に列車に乗っていました。
列車は駅に停車しており、彼女は歯を磨くために水道まで案内してくれたのです。
他にも彼女からはチャイやチャパティ、カレー風味のナッツやバナナなどをご馳走になってしまいました。
親切にしていただいて本当にありがとう！

私がバナナを食べ終わると、彼女が皮を列車の窓から外に捨てるようにゼスチャーをしました。
ためらっていると、やはり捨てろという仕草をします。
”郷に入っては郷に従え。”
私が窓から皮を捨てると、すぐに牛が近づいてきて食べてしまいました。
ひゃ～、線路の上に牛？
びっくりです！

Ladies Coach

While traveling in India, the most annoying thing was the begging.
I've heard that "Giving money to beggars just encourages them to keep living that way."
I think that's true.
In order to get more money from their begging they would even cut off their own legs.
It's so sad".

Hawrah Station was much bigger than I expected.
I was worried about finding the right train.
I asked people again and again for confirmation and finally I got on board.
My reservation was for a sleeper car on the coach limited to women only.
I spent 15 hours getting to Varanasi.

女性専用車

インドを旅する時に、一番悩まさせられるのが物乞いです。
「物乞いにお金をあげることは、彼らのそういう生き方を助長するだけである。」
と聞いたことがあるけど、その通りだと思います。
彼らは、より多くのお金を恵んでもらうために、自分の足を切り落としてしまうことすらあるそう。
悲しすぎる！

ハウラー駅は思っていたより大きく、
ちゃんと目的の電車に乗れるのか心配で、何人かの人に何度も確認し、ようやく乗り込むことができました。
私が予約を入れたのは寝台の女性専用車です。
ベナレスまで15時間をそこで過ごしました。

India Beggars and Begging Scams: What You Should Know

Racetrack // Feb 24, 1990

The following morning, I was very nervous when I went out walking by myself.
It was because I was aware that everybody on the street was looked at me so curiously.
Don't stare at me like that! I'm not a panda or a clown!

On my way back to the hotel, one of Balic's friends came up and spoke to me.
Since he was having chai with Balic , I joined them for a while.
They suggested that we go to the racetrack together.
I had never been to a racetrack before in Japan, but I thought it might be interesting to see the Indian version of a racetrack.
When we arrived, I didn't see any horses there.
Where in the world were the horses?

競馬場

翌朝、一人で散歩をしていてとても緊張しました。
路上にいる人達が,みんな好奇の眼差しで私を見るからです。
「お願いだからじろじろ見ないで！私はパンダでもピエロでもないわよ！」

ホテルに戻る途中、バリックの友人の一人に声をかけられました。
バリックと一緒にお茶しているところだったので、しばらく一緒に時間を過ごしました。
一緒に競馬場に行かないかと誘われ、日本でさえ行ったことがないのにもかかわらず行くことに。
インド版の競馬場を見るのも面白いかと思えたので。
行ってみると、馬の姿はどこにも見えません。
馬は一体どこ？？

Hawrah Station

They explained to me that the actual horse race was held at another venue.
Even though this was indeed a race track, you only listen to a remote broadcast.
I had expected to see the horses running, so I was a bit disappointed.
However, as it was a new experience for me, I did enjoy myself.

Afterwards I went back to my room at the hotel and prepared for my departure.
I was supposed to take a train heading to Benares in the evening,
Around Hawrah Station, it was absolutely chaotic!
So many people were living on the street, some of them were lying down, and some kids were running around naked.
And some people came up to me to beg.

彼らは、競馬は別の場所で開催されているんだと説明してくれました。
レース場があるのに、実況中継が聞こえるだけだったのです。
馬が走っているところを見たかったので、ちょっとがっかりでしたが、
こういうところに来るのも初めての体験だったので、それなりに楽しみました。

ホテルの部屋に戻って、出発の準備。
その晩、ベナレスに向けて列車で移動することになっていたからです。
ハウラー駅の周辺は全くのカオス（混沌）状態でした。
多くの人々が路上で生活しており、寝ている人、裸で走り回っている子ども達も。
そして、何人かの人達が近づいてきて物乞いをしてきました。
