I spent two nights at Delhi, then headed to Agra which is famous for the Taj Mahal.
When walking to the hotel, a young Indian man came up and spoke to me.
He said he was learning Japanese and wanted to learn from me.
As it was his birthday, he said he'd like to invite me to his birthday party.
He seemed nice, so I promised him I would go.
After checking into the hotel, I was wondering what kind of present I could give to him.
I had a Swiss army knife, so I thought that would be nice.
When I was about to go, the hotel manager asked me where I was off to.
He listened to my story and took a look at the man who was waiting for me in front of the hotel.
He said, "You shouldn't go with him. He was a gang member. Everyday is his birthday."
毎日が誕生日
デリーで二晩過ごした後、タージマハルで有名なアグラに向かいました。
ホテルまでの道を歩いていると、若いインド人男性が話しかけてきました。
彼は、日本語を勉強しているので私に教えて欲しいと言い、
そして、今日は自分の誕生日なので、パーティにこないかと誘ってきました。
彼はいい人のように見えたので、行くことを約束。
ホテルにチェックインした後、何をプレゼントに持っていこうか迷い、
スイスアーミーナイフがいいだろうと考えました。
ホテルを出ようとしたときに、ホテルのマネージャーがどこに行くのか聞いてきたので事情を話すと、ホテルの前で待っている男性を見て、
「行かない方がいい。彼はギャングの一味だし、毎日今日が自分の誕生日だと言っているんだから。」と言ったのでした。

New and Old
That night I went on to Delhi by sleeper car and arrived at about 11:00 the next morning.
After having checked into a guest house in Old Delhi, I took a walk about both parts of the city.
New Delhi is totally opposite from Old Delhi. It is well planned, has broader roads and is more quiet.
On my way back from the National Museum, I took up the challenge of riding a public bus.
While I was looking about wondering how I was supposed to pay my bus fare, an elderly man pointed out to me the fare collector.
It was really surprising that though when I paid my fare he didn't have the right change, later he came back and gave me 50 paisa, which was about five yen at the prevailing exchange rate.
Since I had some bad experience before, I was so impressed to see such an honest man here in India!

その夜、寝台車でデリーまで移動し、翌朝11時ごろに到着しました。
デリーは、オールドデリーと、ニューデリーに分かれています。
オールドデリーのゲストハウスの一つにチェックインした後、両方の町を散策しました。
ニューデリーは、オールドデリーとは全くの対極にあります。街はよく整備され、道路も広いく、そして静か。
国立博物館からの帰り道、公共のバスに乗ることに挑戦してみました。
いつ誰に料金を払ったらいいのかわからずにきょろきょろしていると、年配の乗客が、あの人だよと教えてくれました。
一番驚いたのは、私がお金を払う時に、その人がおつりをもっていなかったので、後で50パイサ（当時の日本円で約5円）私に持ってきてくれたことです。
嫌な経験をいろいろした後だったので、インドにもこんなに正直な人がいるんだと感激しました！

Morning Boat Trip
I woke up early next morning and took a boat trip on the Ganges river.
Varanasi is the most sacred place for Hindus.
The Ganges in Varanasi is believed to have the power to wash away sins and give salvation and freedom from the cycle of birth and re-birth.
So many people come to the Ganges river, not only seeking the spiritual, but also some come to wash their clothes or brush their teeth.
There were some dead bodies being cremated at the Ghats, and other dead bodies just washed away.
They were selling a bottle of water form the Ganges as a souvenir, but I didn't want to buy.
Anyway, seeing the sunrise from the boat is wonderful!

翌朝早起きして、ガンジス川のボートに乗りました。
バラナシはヒンズー教とにとって、一番の聖地。
バラナシのガンジス川では、罪が洗い清められ、輪廻からの解脱が得られると考えられています。
多くの人がガンジス川にやってきます。精神的なものを求めるだけでなく、衣服を洗ったり、歯を磨く人も。
ガートで火葬にされる死体もあれば、ただ川に流されるだけのものもあります。
ガンジス川の水をボトルに入れてお土産として売っていましたが、私は買う気になれませんでした。
ともかく、ボートから見る日の出は素晴らしかったです!

Nikujaga(meat and potatoes)
It was a great relief to stay at the Kumiko House.
The owners of this guest house were a Japanese woman named Kumiko and her Indian husband.
Many Japanese travelers had been staying there like a woman who had been traveling for more than two years, a young Buddhist monk, some college students and some unemployed people.
There were some rules in this guest house such as a curfew after sunset, and telling them your destination when you go out .
That means it might not be so safe to stay this area.
Actually, there were a couple of posters about missing travelers.
Kumiko prepared typical Japanese food like steamed rice, miso soup and Mikujyga for our supper, and I was delighted to have them!
Nikujyaga is one of the Japanese people's favorite dishes.

久美子ハウスでは非常に安心して滞在できました。
このゲストハウスのオーナーは、久美子さんという日本人女性と、夫のインド人男性。
たくさんの日本人が滞在していました。2年以上も旅を続けている女性や、若いお坊さん、大学生、プータロー（無職の人）など。
そこには日没後の外出禁止、外出するときには必ず行先を言ってから出かけるなどいくつかのルールがありました。
それだけ、あまり安全ではない地域だということなんでしょうね。
実際に、行方不明の旅行者のポスターが何枚か貼ってありました。
久美子さんは夕食にごはんや、味噌汁、肉じゃがといった和食を用意してくれて感激！
肉じゃがは、日本人の大好きな料理の一つです。

Kumiko House
I was not at all comfortable staying at that hostel, so I thought it was better to leave.
I wanted to avoid any more troubles with rickshaw-men, so I tried to get there by foot.
However, all sorts of people came up and spoke to me like rickshaw-men, people trying to sell something, people trying to take me to another hotel or souvenir shop.
They wouldn't leave me alone and it was so hot to walk with a heavy backpack.
I was at wits end about everything in India at that time.
When I took a rest sitting on the ghats for a while, an Australian couple spoke to me and offered to take me to Kumiko House.
They really saved me!

そのホステルはあまりにも居心地がよくなかったので、離れることに。
翌朝、日本人バックパッカーの間では有名な久美子ハウスに向かいました。
リクシャーマンとのトラブルを避けるため、徒歩で移動。
しかし、リクシャーマンや、物売り、ホテルや土産物屋の客引きなど、いろんな人々が次々にやってきては話しかけてきます。
少しもほっといてくれないし、重いバックパッカーをかついで歩くには暑すぎる。
あの時は、インドの全てのものに疲れ果てていました。
ガートで休んでいると、オーストラリア人のカップルが話しかけてきて、一緒に久美子ハウスまで行ってくれました。
冷たいコーラまでいただき、本当に彼らに救われました！
