Hawa Mahal

Jaipur is the state capital of Rajasthan and well-known as "The Pink City".
That's because many of the architectural sites were built of red and pink sandstone.
Hawa Mahal, which means "Palace of Winds", is also pink and is the most famous landmark of Jaipur.
Originally it was built so the royal ladies could observe everyday life in the street below without being seen.
It was very impressive to see, but the most memorable thing was to meet very friendly Indian people there.
Zedy and his brother took me not only to tourist spots but also to a post office, bank and local residence.
I wanted to write a letter to him after going back to Japan, so I asked his address, but he said he could'nt write any English.
It was very surprised, because he spoke much better English than me.
He said he learned English just by talking to foreign travelers.
I suppose that we Japanese should also learn from them.



ハワーマハル

ジャイプールはラジャスターン地方の州都で、ピンクシティとしてよく知られています。
ピンク色の赤砂岩で建物が作られているため、そう呼ばれているようです。
ハワーマハルの意味は「風の宮殿」で、ジャイプールのシンボルでもあります。
元々は、宮殿に住む女性達が、他の人に見られることなく、町の様子を見るためのものだったようです。

とても印象深い建物でしたが、それ以上に思い出に残ったのがとてもフレンドリーな人達との出会いでした。
ゼディと彼の兄弟は、観光スポットだけではなく、郵便局や銀行、一般の人々の住まいにも連れていってくれました。
日本に帰ってから手紙を書きたかったので、住所を聞いたのですが、英語が書けないとのこと。
彼らは私などよりもずっと英語が上手に話せたので、これを聞いて本当にびっくりしました。
英語は、外国人観光客と話すことで覚えたそうです。
日本人もこの英語習得法を見習うべきかもしれませんね。

Visiting House

On the next day, I was with them again.
They said they would prepare an Indian-style breakfast, and they bought some kind of cookies or fries from a outside food stall.
They warned me that I shouldn't eat the filling because it might be too spicy for me to eat.

Then Zedy's brother Abraham took me to see his house.
He introduced me his big families .
His children were so cute, some of them changed their clothes for taking a photo.
His wife let me taste their lunch.
I hadn't expected that I would get a chance of visiting a native Indian's house.
I was so lucky to have had such a great opportunity!

お宅訪問

翌日、私はまた彼らと一緒に過ごしました。
彼らは、インド式の朝食を用意するといってくれ、屋台でクッキーやフライのようなものを買ってきてくれました。
中身は辛すぎるから食べない方がいいといわれましたが。

そして、ゼディのお兄さんのアブラハムは、彼の自宅に連れていき
家族を紹介してくれました。
子ども達はとても可愛らしく、何人かは写真撮影のために着替えも。
彼の奥さんにはランチを味見させてもらいました。
地元のインド人家族の家を訪問できるとは思っていなかったので、
こんな素晴らしい機会が得られたことは非常にラッキーでした！

Monkey Temple and Two Indian Names

I met an Indian guy named Zedy onthe day I arrived in Jodhpur.
Zedy was learning Japanese, and took me to the jewel workshop which his brother owned.

That day we had breakfast and lunch with him, his brother and his friends.
He gave me a ride on a motor scooter to the Monkey Temple.
He also gave me an Indian woman's name, Shabnam.He said the meaning was "dewdrops."
I like that name very much, and actually I met many women with the same name during this trip.
It's quite a popular name in India

His friend insisted that Chandra was the more suitable name for me than Shabnam.
He said it meant "moonlight".
In Hindu mythology, Chandra is the god of the moon.

I like both names, but it's a bit strange that they called me by different names.

モンキーテンプル ＆　二つのインド名

ジョードプルに着いた日、私はゼディという青年に会いました。
彼は日本語を勉強しており、彼のお兄さんが経営している宝石工場を見学させてくれました。
私はその日、彼や彼のお兄さん、彼の友達と一緒に朝食＆昼食。
彼はスクーターでモンキーテンプル（猿寺）にも連れていってくれました。
また、私にシャブナムというインド人女性の名前をつけてくれ、意味は朝露だと教えてくれました。
その名前を気に入りましたが、インド旅行中たくさんのシャブナムに遭遇。
インドではとても人気のある名前だったようです。

また、彼の友人は、シャブナムよりチャンドラがいいと主張。
名前の意味は月の光。ヒンズーの神話では、チャンドラは月の神のようです。

私はどちらの名前も気に入りましたが、二人が私をバラバラの名前で呼ぶのはちょっと妙でした。

Elephant Taxi

I met a Japanese girl at the retiring room in Jaipur Station.
She was a college student and her major was Hindi.
She said it was her third time visiting India.
I envied her because she could converse with local people in their own language.

We went to the City Palace and Amber Fort together.
The fort is located in a mountainous area, and tourists can enjoy riding an elephant to the top.
Of course, we also took a ride. It was quite interesting.


象のタクシー

ジャイプル駅のリタイアリングルームで、一人の日本人女性と会いました。
彼女は大学生で、専攻はヒンズー語。
インドに来たのは3回目だと言っていました。
地元の人達と現地の言葉で会話ができるというのは羨ましかったな。

私達は一緒にシティパレスとアンベール城に行きました。
アンベール城は丘の上にあり、観光客は象に乗って上までいくことができます。
私たちももちろん乗りましたが、とても面白い体験でした。

Souvenir Shop

Next day, I went to the Taj Mahal again,because I thought it might be my last chance ever.
Then I stopped by a souvenir shop near the hotel and bought some small gifts for my family like a marble chessboard, and a jewelry box.
I asked them to send them to Japan, but I would never see them again.
I think they didn't send them to me after all.
I've heard that sometimes this happens in this country.
I should have brought them to the post office myself.

The shop owner also suggested that I have made some jewelry with my own design.
He said he could have it ready for me before my departure, but in the end I couldn't get it when I left.
It was hard to believe that more time was needed to finish.
Fortunately, one of Japanese backpackers who was supposed to stay a couple days longer than me promised that he would get the jewelry and would send it to me after he got back to Japan.
Actually he did send it to me, but I was shocked to see it.
Even though I used small diamonds and black opal in the design, it looked like just a toy!


土産物屋

翌日、またタージマハルを見に行きました。きっとこれが人生最後のチャンスだろうと思ったからです。
そして、ホテルの近くにあった土産物屋に立ち寄り、大理石のチェスボードや宝石箱を購入。
それを日本に送ってくれるように頼みましたが、私がそれを見ることは二度とありませんでした。
結局送ってくれなかったんでしょうね。この国ではそういうことが度々おこると聞いていたし。
自分で郵便局に持ち込めばよかった・・。

土産物屋の主人は、自分でデザインをしたジュエリーを作ることも勧めてきました。私が出発するまでに出来上がると言っていたのに、結局受け取れず。
出来上がるまでもう少し時間がかかるなんて信じらない。
幸いなことに、一人の日本人バックパッカーが私より何日か長くそこに滞在する予定だったので、代わりに受け取って日本についたら送ってくれると言ってくれました。
実際に彼は送ってくれたのですが、実物をみてびっくり。
小さなダイアモンドとオパールを使ってデザインしたジュエリーだったのに、まるでおもちゃでした！
