【Noosa Head】 A Fire from a camping stove

I stayed at Noosa for three days.
Dominique enjoyed surfing a lot at a beautiful sunshine beach.

At first, I would go by myself to the next destination, but he also had a plan to go to Airlie Beach, so we decided to go there together.

After we left Noosa beach, we stayed one night at Hervey Bay, and the next day got as far as just before Gladstone.
It was a slower pace than I planned, but it would be no problem.

When I was making coffee on my camping stove for breakfast, I had an accident and a big fire flared up.
It was because a screw on the fuel tank had come loose and the flame spread to the gasoline in the fuel tank.
I was so surprised and I had no idea what to do, but Dominique came immediately and helped me.
He was a big help, indeed!

キャンピングストーブからの出火

ヌーサには3日間滞在しました。
ドミニクは、美しいサンシャインビーチでサーフィンを楽しんだようです。

最初、私は次の目的地まで一人で行く予定でしたが。彼もアーリービーチまで行く計画だということだったので、二人で行くことに。

ヌーサを出た後は、ハービィベイに1泊、そして翌日グラッドストンの手前で宿泊。
私の当初の計画よりはずいぶんゆっくりしたペースですが、まあいいか・・。

朝食のためにコーヒーを作っている時、誤って火が燃え広がってしまいました。
燃料タンクのねじがゆるんでいたらしく、燃料タンクのガソリンにまで火がうつってしまったのです。
びっくりしてどうしたらいいのかあたふたしていると、ドミニクがすぐにきてくれて、本当に助かりました！

【Noosa Head】 Reunion

The destination of that day was Noosa Head.

I lost my way in the city of Brisbane for a while, but finally
I could get to my destination.

When I was looking at the map on the road at Noosa　Head, and a car parked in front of my motorcycle.

What a coincidence!
It was Dominique.（I had met him at Byron Bay a　week ago.)

We decided to stay at the same caravan park and had dinner together.

I got some pasta and vegetables at a shop, so we had Japanese pasta with butter and soy sauce for two.
I like traveling by myself because I can do exactly what I want, but when it comes meals, I always glad to have someone to eat with.

再会

その日の目的地は、ヌーサヘッド。
ブリスベンの市内で道に迷ってウロウロしたけれど、ようやく到着。
ヌーサヘッドの町の道端で地図を見ていると、私のバイクの前に一台の車が停まりました。

なんという偶然！
それはドミニクでした。(彼には一週間ほど前に、バイロンベイで会ったことがあったのです。）

その日は同じキャラバンパークに泊まることにし、一緒に夕飯を食べました。
お店でパスタと野菜を調達し、バターと醤油を入れて日本風のパスタを二人分作りました。

一人旅は自分のやりたいように行動できるので好きですが、食事の時は誰かと一緒だとやっぱり嬉しいですね。

【Brisbane】A Domitory

After staying a couple of days at Byron Bay, I headed to
Brisbane.

Just before I got to Brisbane, I visited Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary which is the world's oldest and largest koala sanctuary.

It's interesting to know that the word koala means “no water” or "lack of water".

I decided to stay at the youth hostel in Brisbane.
I wanted to get a room at the dormitory, but that night there were none available ,so I stayed in a twin room.
However, it was not so comfortable, because the person in the same room didn't speak at all.

Therefore, I tried to move to a dormitory the next day.
Fortunately, I could get a room there and I found that it got much more sun shine than in the room in which I had stayed the previous day, and it looked clean.
I could even put all my luggage under the bed since the bed had long legs.

Sometimes, staying at a dormitory was better than a twin room.


ドミトリー

バイロンベイに数日滞在後、ブリスベンに向かいました。
ブリスベンの手前で、世界で最も歴史が古く規模の大きなローンパインコアラ保護区へ。

コアラというのは、水を飲まないという意味だというのは面白いですね。

ブリスベンでは、ユースホステルに滞在。
ドミリーに宿泊しようと思っていましたが、あいにく満室だったので、ツインルームで一泊しました。
しかし、同室の人がほどんど話そうとしないので、あまり居心地はよくなかったのです。

翌日、もう一度ドミトリーに空きがないかたずね、幸いにもドミトリーに移ることができました。
前日宿泊した部屋よりも陽がよくあたるし、清潔な感じ。
ベットの脚が長くて、荷物を全部そこに置くことができました。

たまには、ツインよりドミトリーの方がよいこどもあるんですね。

【Byron Bay】A good location！

Byron Bay was a very relaxing place with a beautiful
beach.
I got a map at the information center and decided on a
caravan park for the night.

I wanted to pitch my tent somewhere with a nice view, but
places in front of the sea were crowded.

While I was wondering where to stay , a French man spoke
to me.

His name was Dominique.
He was traveling by car and enjoying surfing.

He said that he was going to take his car to go surfing and
asked me if I could secure the place for him.

His car was parked close to the sea, and he let me pitch
my tent beside of his car.

I was glad to stay at a such a good location!


That evening, I went out for dinner with him, that was
fun, too.

バイロンベイ

バイロンベイは、美しい海岸のあるくつろげる場所です。
観光案内所で地図を入手した後、その日宿泊するキャラバンパークを決めました。

海の近くの眺めのよいところにテントをたてたかったのですが、さすがに混みあっており、
どこにしようか迷っていると、フランス人の男性が話しかけてきました。

名前はドミニク。
彼は、サーフィンを楽しみながら車で旅をしているようでした。

彼は、自分はこれから車でサーフィンをしに行ってくるので、場所を確保しておいてくれないかと聞いてきました。
彼の車は海際に停めてあり、彼の車の隣の少しあいているスペースにテントを張らせてくれるとのこと。
景色のいい場所にテントを張ることができてラッキー！

その晩は、彼と一緒に夕飯を食べに行き、それも楽しい出来事でした。

【Coffs Harbour】 Going Over the Speed Limit

Finally morning had come after a freezing night.
The weather was beautiful and it was a perfect day for　touring.

I drove about 250km, then stayed at a caravan park in Coffs Harbour.
Two Aussie men said to me, ”Konnichiwa", in Japanese as they knew a few Japanese phrases.

I was glad to have a short conversation with them.
The next day, on my way to Byron Bay, I got stopped for speeding.

Oh, no!
When I took off my helmet, the policemen in the patrol car seemed to be surprised to see me.
They didn't expect that it would be a small Japanese woman who was riding the motorbike.

In the end, they warned me to be careful about my speed and just let me go.
My thanks to them for their kindness!



スピード違反

凍えそうな夜が明けて、ついに朝がきました。
とてもよいお天気で、ツーリングにはもってこいのお天気。
250kmほど走って、コフスハーバーのキャラバンパークに宿泊しました。
二人のオーストラリア人のおじさんが、日本語で「こんにちは」と言って話しかけてくれました。
ちょっとだけ会話ができてよかったな。

翌日、バイロンベイに向かう途中、スピード違反で止められてしまいました。
なんてこと！

ヘルメットを脱ぐと、パトカーに乗っていた警官は私をみて驚いた様子でした。
そのバイクを運転していたのが小さい日本人女性がとは思わなかったのでしょうね。
結局、スピードに気を付けるように警告したのみで、解放してくれました。
彼らのご親切に感謝します！

【Sydney】Departure

It was the first of August when I left the Youth Hostel.
Sayuri and a couple of other friends saw me off.

Up until the previous day the weather had been nice, but　it was drizzling lightly that morning.
I don't like to ride a motorbike in the rain, because it's too
slippery.

In any case, I was excited to set off on the trip!
After driving 300km, I tried find a caravan park.
When I checked into one of them, there was nobody in the　camping area but me.

August was still winter in Australia, and all through the night I shivered from the cold in the tent.
I put on as many clothes as possible to endure the cold.


出発

そのユースホステルを離れたのは、8月1日。
さゆりと、何人かの友人が見送ってくれました。

前日まではいいお天気だったのに、その日の朝はサラサラとした小雨。
雨の日に運転するのは、路面が滑りやすくて嫌だなあ・・。

300㎞ほど走ったところで、その日宿泊するキャラバンパークを探し始めました。
チェックインしてみると、そのキャンピングエリアに宿泊するのは私だけのようでした。

8月はオーストラリアではまだ冬で、私はテントの中で一晩中寒くてブルブル。
できるだけたくさんの服を着込んで寒さをしのいでいました。

【Sydney】Preparation for Touring

I took the motorbike to the motorcycle shop to have it fixed.

I asked them to overhaul the engine and change some parts.

I was happy because they were so friendly.

One of my friends in Japan sent me the helmet and boots which I had used in Japan.
 I bought some goods for the trip such as a tank for reserve gasoline.


Almost one month had passed since I began to go to the English school, and I wanted to set out touring as soon as the motorbike was ready.


Staying at this youth hostel was very useful.
I met many nice people there, we often made our meals together or went out drinking sometimes, but it was time to move on to the next step.


ツーリングの準備

バイクを修理するために、バイク屋に運びました。
エンジンのオーバーホールと、いつつかのパーツの交換を依頼。
とてもフレンドリーな人達で一安心。

日本にいる友達の一人が、私が日本で使っていたヘルメットとブーツを送ってきてくれました。
予備のガソリンタンクなども買い足してツーリングの準備。

英語学校に通い始めてから1か月が経とうとしており、
バイクの準備が出来次第、出発したいと思っていました。

ここのユースホステルでの滞在はとても有意義だったな。
素敵な人達にたくさん会えて、一緒に食事を作ったり、飲みにいったり。
でも、そろそろ次の段階に進む時期が来たのです。

【Sydney】Decision to Buy the Motorbike

Luckily, I had met a couple of people at the Youth Hostel where I was staying who knew about motorbikes very well.
There were a few people who also had a plan to travel in Australia.
I asked one of them to take a look at the condition of the bike.

He had worked at a used-motorbike shop before coming to Australia, and kindly came and examined the motorbike with me.
After checking for a while, he said that it would be okay,  so I decided to buy it.

I had ridden a 250cc model in Japan , so a 500cc bike was quite big for me.
However, the previous owner of this bike had adjusted the seat to a lower position because of her height.
I was really happy about it.


幸運なことに、私が滞在していたユースホステルでバイクに詳しい人何人かに会いました。
同じようにオーストラリアをバイクで旅行しようとしている人も。
私は、そのうちの一人に一緒にバイクの状態を見てほしいと頼みました。

彼は日本で中古のバイク屋で働いていたことがあり、親切にも一緒に来てバイクの調子を見てくれました。
しばらくあちこちを確認した後、彼がたぶん大丈夫だろうというので、購入を決断。

私は日本で250㏄のバイクに乗っていたので、500ccは私にとっては非常に大きかったのですが、このバイクのオーナーが、彼女の身長に合わせてシート高を低く（あんこ抜き）していてくれたので、それも嬉しいところでした。

【Sydney】A Notice Board

Since learning English in school was not my main purpose for staying in Sydney, I started to look for a motorbike.
If I could have afforded to buy a new one, it would have been no problem.
However, since my budget was tight, I had to find a used one.

After visiting the working holiday office a couple of times, one day I found on the notice board information about a private sale.
It was a 500cc. Honda motorbike.

The owner was a Japanese girl who was also staying in Australia for working holiday.
She said that she was the fourth owner of this bike.
She had tried to travel on this bike, but she had given up because of the bike's condition.

I was not sure if it was a good idea or not, but I thought that if it could be completely overhauled, I might be able to use it.

掲示板

英語学校に通うことが私の主な目的ではなかったので、バイクを探し始めました。

もし新車を買う余裕があれば、全く問題はなかったのでしょうが、

私の予算は厳しかったので、中古を見つけなければなりませんでした。

ワーキングホリデーオフィスに何度か足を運び、ある日、掲示板の個人売買の情報をみつけました。

ホンダ製の500ccのバイクです。

持ち主は日本人女性で、彼女もワーキングホリデーで滞在中。

彼女はそのバイクの四番目の持ち主だと言っていました。

バイクでツーリングを試みたものの、途中でバイクの調子が悪くなり、断念したとのこと。

そのバイクを買うことが果たしていい考えかどうかはわかりませんでしたが、もしオーバーホールをきちんとすれば乗れるのではないかと思いました。

【Sydney】 English School

After staying a few days in Sydney, I realized my English was not sufficient to communicate with people at all, so I decided to go to the English language school with Sayuri.
We visited a couple of schools, then chose one.

We took a test to determine at which class level we would be studying.

The first day of the school, I found my name on the list for the upper intermediate class.
To my surprise, Sayuri was in the top level class!

She said that it was her first trip abroad, so, most of the time, I would use my poor English for such things as opening a bank account.
However, the list showed me that her English was at a higher level than mine by a few steps.



英語学校

シドニーに何日か滞在しているうちに、私の英語はコミュニケーションをとるのに全く不十分であるということを痛感したので、Sayuriと一緒に1か月間だけ語学学校に通うことにしました。
私達はいくつか学校を見学した後、一つを選択。
どのレベルのクラスで勉強するかを決定するためのテストを受けました。

初日に貼りだされたリストを確認し、私の名前を中級クラスの中に発見。
驚いたことに、Sayuriはトップレベルクラスでした！

彼女は海外が初めてだと言っていたので、銀行に口座を作るような場合でも主に私が拙い英語で話していたのですが、このリストは、彼女の英語レベルは私より数段上だというとこを示していたのでした(-_-;)。

【Sydney】 A Roommate in Sydney

I arrived at the Sydney Airport at the begging of June in
1992.
While I was waiting at the baggage claim, a Japanese girl
spoke to me.

She also had come to Australia for a working holiday and
she said that she also had not yet decided on a hotel to
stay for the night .

So, on that day we stayed together at the YWCA in
Sydney.
Her name was Sayuri, she had a plan to got to an English
language school.

At that time, I wasn't thinking about going to school, but I
did need to find a motorbike. In any case, I had to find a
place to stay for a while.
After staying at the YWCA for one night, we moved to a
backpaker's hotel in Kings Cross for a week, then we stay
together at the youth Hostel for about a month.

シドニーでのルームメイト

1992年6月初旬、シドニー空港に到着しました。
手荷物受取場所で自分のバックパックが出てくるのを待っている時に、日本人女性が話しかけてきました。
彼女もワーキングホリデーでオーストラリアにきており、その日のホテルをまだ決めていないとのこと。
そこで、私達はその日YWCAで一緒に宿泊することに。

彼女の名前は、Sayuri。彼女は英語学校に行く予定だということでした。
その時、私は学校に通うつもりはありませんでしたが、
バイクを探すためにしばらく滞在する場所が必要でした。
YWCAに1泊した後、キングスクロスの付近のバックパッカーズに1週間、そしてユースホステルに約1か月、彼女と一緒に宿泊したのでした。

You Only Live One time!

Almost all my friends said it would be too difficult for me
to be touring in Australia by myself.
They worried about my lack of mechanical knowledge on
motorbikes and my poor riding skills.
Besides, it would be a big disadvantage for me if I didn't
get a job before graduating University.

Because then, lifetime employment was still common in
Japan.

However, I didn't want to give up my dream.
You only live once!

At that time, a friend of mine had a plan to go to Canada
for a working holiday, so we shared an apartment to save
some expenses.

I worked for a year and a half to earn money for my trip,
and finally the day of my flight to Australia had arrived!

人生は一度きり!

ほぼ全ての友人たちが、一人でオーストラリアをツーリングするのは大変すぎるんじゃないかと言いました。
バイクに関する知識もほとんどなく、運転技術も未熟。
加えて、大学卒業前に就職を決めないことは、私自身にとって大きなマイナスです。
日本では、まだ終身雇用が一般的なので。

しかし、あきらめたくはありませんでした。
人生は一度きり！だからです。

当時、友人の一人がワーキングホリデーでカナダに行くことを計画しており、私達は出費を抑えるために部屋をシェアして住みました。

1年半ほど働いて旅行費用を貯めた後、ついにオーストラリアに出発する日がきました！

Next Destination

Thank you very much for reading and correcting the story of my travel to India in 1990.

My next destination was Australia in 1992.
First of all, I am going to write about what it was that led me there.


When I was a University student, I loved touring by motorbike.
During almost every long school break, I would go to the country side such places as Hokkaido and in Kyusyu on
my motorbike.

One day, when I was at a bookstore looking for a guidebook of Hokkaido for my second trip, I found a
book.
It was a travel story written by a Japanese man who had traveled in Australia with his motorbike.

Since then, touring by motorbike in Australia became my dream.


次の目的地

1990年のインドの旅の話を読んで添削いただき、ありがとうございました。

私の次の旅の目的地は、1992年のオーストラリアです。
まず、どうしてそこに行くことになったのかを書きたいと思います。

大学時代、私はバイクツーリングが大好きでした。
長期の休みの時にはたいてい、北海道や九州のような自然豊かな場所にバイクで出かけていました。
ある日、2度目の北海道ツーリングのためのガイドブックを書店で探している時、1冊の本を発見。
それは、日本人男性が自分のオーストラリアツーリングのことを書いた本でした。
その時から、オーストラリアツーリングは私の夢になりました。

The Bright Side

When I was in Nepal, I was so sick and I had to go to the
hospital.
I took a blood test there but I couldn't get the results
because of a worker's strike.

I wonder if I had gotten the results at that time, would I
have been hospitalized in Nepal?

In that case, I might have felt lonely and uneasy.

Therefore, I think I was lucky to have been hospitalized in
Japan, because some of my friends visited me even
though I was placed in an isolation ward.

During my trip to India and Nepal, I lost 8kgs.

My friends said, "You look better than before."!


明るい側面

ネパール滞在中は非常に体調が悪かったので、現地の病院に行きました。
血液検査もしましたが、病院の職員のストライキのため結果は受け取れませんでしたが、もしその結果を受け取っていたら、ネパールで入院しなければならなかったのかもしれません。
そうであれば、きっと淋しくて不安な気持ちになっていたでしょう。

そう考えると、隔離病棟にいたものの、日本の病院に入院したことは、友人が訪ねきてくれたりできたので、ありがたかったと思います。
インド、ネパールの旅の間、私は８キロ体重が減りました。
友人達には、前よりスタイルがよくなったねと言われました！

Hospitalized

I came back to Japan in the beginning of April after six weeks of travel.
While traveling in India, I always suffered from terrible diarrhea, so at Narita Airport I told the authorities about it.
After having some tests done, I returned to my apartment.

They said that I had contracted a reportable communicable disease known to be typhoid.
I was asked about whom I met and which toilets I used after returning to Japan.
They came to the University to which I belonged at that time and disinfected the toilets.

Then, I spent the next five weeks in the hospital.

帰国・入院

6週間の旅の後、.４月のはじめに日本に戻りました。
インドにいる間、下痢がひどかったので空港で申告。
検査を受けた後アパートへ。

２日後、保健所から電話がかかってきました。
私は腸チフスという法定伝染病にかかっており、すぐに入院が必要だとのこと。
日本に戻ってから、誰と会ってどのトイレを使ったかを聞かれ、
私が通っていた大学にも来てトイレを消毒していきました。

そして、私は５週間入院生活を送ったのでした。

【Bangkok】Thai Movie

The fellow worked at that temple, so he didn't seem to be a suspicious person.
He said thaｔ we would have a dinner with his brother and brother's girlfriend at a restaurant.
He also had a plan to go to the movie after that.
It sounded interesting, so in the end I decided to go with him.


Actually, it was his birthday and I had a pleasant time with them.
I don't remember what the title of the movie was, but it was an action film.
So I could enjoy seeing it, even though I didn't understand Thai language.
I was surprised to see that everybody stood up for a short video clip  of the King of Thailand before the beginning of the movie.
It was great experience for me.

タイの映画

男性はその寺で働いており、怪しそうには見えませんでした。
彼は、お兄さんとその彼女と一緒にレストランで夕飯を一緒に食べる予定だということでした。
その後映画を見に行く予定だとも話してくれました。
面白そうだと思って、結局一緒に行くことに。

実際にその日は彼の誕生日で、彼らと一緒に私も楽しい時間を過ごしました。
映画のタイトルは覚えていませんが、アクション映画だったので
タイ語がわからなくても楽しめたのがよかったな。
映画が始まる前に、タイ国王の短い画像が流れて全員が起立したのにも驚きました。
非常に貴重な経験だったと思います。

【Bangkok】Real Birthday?

The last day of my stay in Bangkok, I visited a temple.
It's called the Wat Traimit and has a brilliant golden buddha.

While I was looking around, a Thai fellow spoke to me.
After chatting for a while, he said that today was his birthday, so he'd like to invite me for dinner with his family.
I was suspicious because I was told a similar kind of story when I was India.
Hmm, was it really his birthday?

At that time, I followed the hotel owner's advice and I didn't go to the party.
I wondered what should I do this time.

本当の誕生日？

バンコク滞在の最終日、寺を訪れました。
ワット・トライミットというところで、ここには輝く黄金仏があります。

見てまわっていると、タイ人の男性が話しかけてきました。
しばらく話をした後、彼が、今日は誕生日だから家族との夕食に私も来ないかと誘ってくれました
う～ん、本当に誕生日なの？

私が疑ったのは、インドでも同じような話をされたからです。
あの時は、ホテルのオーナーのアドバイスに従ってパーティには行きませんでしたが、今回はどうしたものかと悩みました

【Bangkok】Staying with a Couple

The man of the couple said that he had stayed there before and there was nothing to worry about.
I would never have stayed there if I were by myself, but in the end I decided to stay.

There were two reasons.
One was my curiosity.
The other was that the woman of the couple begged me to stay with them.

She seemed tired of their relationship.
I didn't know much about them, but I thought that by staying with them I could help her.

Actually, it felt a little weird because they looked like they had completely different personalities.
While she was a typical backpacker, the man was far from being your ordinary Japanese traveler.

カップルと一緒の宿泊

カップルの男性は、そこに以前宿泊したことがあり、何も心配ないと言いました。
もし私が一人だったら、絶対にそこへは宿泊しなかったと思いますが、その時は結局宿泊を決めました。

理由は二つ。
一つ目は、私の好奇心。
二つ目は、カップルの女性が私に一緒に宿泊して欲しいと頼み込んできたからです。

彼女は二人の関係に疲れている様子でした。
彼らのことはよく知りませんでしたが、一緒に宿泊することで彼女の力になってあげられるのではないかと思ったのでした。

実際のところ、彼らは全く違う個性を持っているように見えて、ちょっと妙な気がしていました。
彼女が典型的なバックパッカーなのに対し、男性は、普通の日本人とはかけ離れていたからです。

Travelling for a long time

He wore a kurtha which was the Indian national costume and he was carrying just a small bag.
I don't know what he was and what he did before he came to India, but at that time, he didn't seem to be concerned about anything in the real world in which he had to live.

I imagined that he had a quite challenge ahead of him when he had once again to fit into Japanese society.
The hostel had a mysterious atmosphere and there were many of that kind of unique people that were hanging about.

Traveling is fun, but traveling for too long sometimes can make it difficult for people to adapt in this busy world once they are finished.

That night, I stayed with the couple in the same room.
I often wonder where he is and what he is doing now.

長期の旅行

彼はインドの民族衣装のクルータを着て、小さいバックのみを持っていました。
彼がインドに来る前にどんな仕事をしていたかは知りませんが、彼は当時、彼が生きていくべき現実世界には関心がない様子でした。

彼が、この先日本社会で生きていくのは大変なことだと思います。
このホステルそのものが不思議な雰囲気で、そういったちょっと変わった人達が集まってきていました。

旅行は楽しいですが、あまりに長期にわたる旅行は、旅行が終わった時、この忙しい社会に適応するのを難しくしてしまうような気がします。

その夜、私はそのカップルと同じ部屋に滞在。
彼は今頃どこで何をやっているんだろうなあ。

【Bangkok】 "Not Recommended" Hostel

When I came back to India, I did so by plane not by bus.
After staying at kolkata(Calcutta) for a couple of days, I flew back to Bangkok.

At the Bangkok airport, I met a Japanese couple.
They said that they were going to the kaosan road in the center of the city and asked me if I would like to go there by the same tuku-tuku.
Off course I was glad to go there with them, so we headed to the Kaosan road together.
When we got there, they suggested that we would stay at the same hostel.
However, the hostel they had picked was one that the guide book had labeled “not recommend”.

お勧めしないホステル

インドに戻るときは、バスではなく飛行機を使いました。
コルカタ（カルカッタ）に数日宿泊した後、バンコクへ。

バンコクの空港で日本人カップルに会いました。
彼らは町の中心部にあるカオサンロードに行くので、よかったら一緒にトゥクトゥクに乗って行かないかと聞いてきました。
もちろんそれは嬉しい申し出だったので、一緒にカオサンロードへ向かいました。
着くと、彼らは一緒のホステルに泊まろうと言ってくれたのですが、
彼らが選んだのは、私のガイドブックに「お勧めしないホステル」と書かれた宿だったのです。

【Kathmandu】The Stupa Painted with Buddha's Eyes

The places I visited in Kathmandu were, among others, Durbar Square, Hanuman Dhoka Square, and Swayambhunath Temple.
The temple was located at the top of the hill, so we had to climb up the hill by means of long continuous stairs.
It was hard for me because I had not yet fully recovered.
At the top of the hill there was a fascinating stupa, and from there I could enjoy a nice view of Kathmandu.

I met a Nepalese fellow on the way and chatted with him for a while.
He said that he was an elementary teacher and that he had a dream to go to Japan.

カトマンドゥで私が訪れたのは、ダンバール広場、旧王宮、スワヤンブナート寺院など。
特にスワヤンブナート寺院は素晴らしかったです。
寺院は丘の上にあり、長く続く階段を登らなければなりませんでした。
完全に身体が回復していない私にとっては大変。
しかし、丘の上のストゥーパは素晴らしく、丘の上からのカトマンドゥの景色も楽しむことができました。

途中、ネパールの青年と出会ってしばらく話をしました。
彼は小学校の教師で、いつか日本に行ってみたいと話していました。

【Kathmandu】Hospital

The next day, I decided to go to the hospital.
My tour mate was kind enough to take me to the hospital by taxi.

I got a blood test there and the doctor said that I could get the results if I would come back three days later.
（I don't remember exactly that it was three days or a week later, but I needed to come back to get a result in any case.)

At least, I had a prescription and I could buy an antibiotic drug.
After I took that medicine, I became much better.
I thought I had recovered quite well.

病院

翌日、私は病院に行くことを決めました。
ツアーメイトが親切にもタクシーで連れていってくれました。

血液検査を受けた後、医者は、結果が３日後に出るので取りにくるように指示。
(3日後と言ったか一週間後と言ったか正確には覚えていませんが、とにかく結果を受け取るために再度訪れる必要がありました。）

少なくとも、私は処方箋を受け取って抗生物質を買うことができました。
薬を飲んだ後、みるみる回復。
完全に回復できたように思えました。

1990 People's Movement

A couple days later, I went to the hospital again to get the diagnosis.
However, the hospital was closed because of a workers strike.
I told them I just needed to get a blood test result, but they refused to give it me.

In fact, while I stayed in Nepal a big people's movement was underway.
Almost every night, there was a massive blackout, people demonstrated and marched to demand an end to the absolute monarchy.
I was watching it from the hotel window.

1990年の民主化運動

数日後、診断結果を聞きに病院に行きました。
しかし、病院は職員のストライキにより閉鎖。
私は、血液検査の結果が知りたいだけだからと話したのですが、診断書をもらうことはできませんでした。

実際、私がネパールに滞在していた時、大きな民主化運動が起きていました。
ほぼ毎晩停電があり、人々は絶対君主制の終焉を求めるデモを行っていました。
私はホテルの窓からそのデモ行進を見ていたのです。
