【Pokhara・Kathmandu】 A Blank Travel Journal

Pokhara was a peaceful place surrounded by beautiful mountains.
Especially impressive was the mountain called Machhapuchhre which means fishtail.

I am writing these stories based on the journal which I had been keeping during my travels.
However, I hadn't written anything about Pokhara and Kathmandu in this travel journal.
That's because I was sick while staying in Nepal.
One month had passed since I embarked upon my travels , so I thought it was just because I was tired and needed some rest.

空白の旅日記

ポカラは美しい山々に囲まれた静かなところです。
特に、マチャプチャレ（魚の尾）という山は印象的。

私はこの旅の話を旅行中に書いていた旅日記をもとに書いていますが、ポカラとネパールについては、その日記には何も書いてありません。
ネパールに滞在中、ずっと体調がよくなかったのです。
旅を初めてから1か月がたっており、体調が悪いのはただ疲れているためで、休息が必要だと思っていました。

Something Wrong Had Happened to Me

I stayed four nights at Pokhara and went on to Kathmandu.
I was still not feeling well.

Then I woke up in the middle of the night because I felt so hot.
My whole body was covered by sweat and suddenly I felt so cold as the sweat evaporated.
I was shaking with fever and chills throughout the night.
I've never had that kind of sickness before, so I realized something seriously wrong had happen to me.

ポカラに４晩宿泊し、カトマンドゥに移動しました。
私は相変わらず具合がよくありませんでした。

ある夜、真夜中に身体が熱くて目を覚ましました。
身体全体に汗をかいており、その汗が冷えて突然身体が寒くなりました。
私は、暑さと寒さで一晩中震えていました。
今までこれほどの体調の悪さを感じたことはなく、自分の体に何か悪い事が起こったのだと気づきました。

【Delhi＆Varanasi】 The Waiting Room

I arrived at the Delhi station at about 2:30 p.m.
First of all, I went to the New Dehli station to make a reservation to Varanasi.
They said that the train I wanted to take would not be available tomorrow, but I could get a seat today.
So, I decided to leave today.

Next, I had lunch at the station, walked around in the city for a while, and took a shower in a waiting room.
The waiting room and retiring room are convenient facilities when traveling in India by train.
When I got to the station, the train's departure time had been delayed and the platform was changed.
I asked several people about it, but everybody said different things.
It made me so tired.

待合室

デリーには午後2時半過ぎに到着。
最初に、ベナレスまでの切符を手配するためにニューデリーの駅へ。
明日は私の乗りたい列車の予約がとれないけれど、今日なら可能といわれ、今日出発することにしました。

次に、駅でお昼ご飯を食べ、町を少し歩き、待合室（ウエィティングルーム）でシャワーを浴びました。
ウェイティングルームやリタイアメントルームは、インドを列車で旅行する際にはとても便利です。
駅に着くと、列車の出発時刻は遅延で、プラットフォームも変更に。
何人かの人に尋ねましたが、みんなバラバラのことを言うのでとにかく疲れました。

A Tour Mate and Pokhara

 In Varanasi, I stayed at Kumiko House again.
I had a plan to go to Nepal by bus and I got a tour mate at Kumiko house.
He was a Japanese man who had been traveling around the world for more than 10 years.
He said that for him traveling is just killing time.
I wondered, if I were to continue my travel for such a long time, would I also feel that way?

I stayed 2 nights at Varanasi and headed to Pokhara.
When I crossed the border from India to Nepal, almost all the scenery was different.

旅の仲間とポカラ

バラナシでは、また久美子ハウスに宿泊しました。
私はネパールにバスで行こうと計画をしており、ここでツアーメイトを得ました。
彼は日本人で、10年以上も旅を続けているそう。
彼は、「自分にとって旅とは、単なる人生の時間つぶしである」と言っていました。
それだけ長く旅を続ければ、私もそんな風に思ってしまうのでしょうかね。

バラナシに2泊した後、ポカラに向けて出発。
インドとネパールの国境を越えると、全ての景色が違っていました。

【Udaipur】 Picturesque Scenery

After I mailed a postcard at a post office, I went to the Moti Magri.
A statue of Maharana Pratap on top of the hill was famous, but I liked the view from the rock garden better.
We could see the beautiful lake, it was a picturesque scenery.

Then I headed to the Jagdish temple located in the center of the city.
The carvings of the temple were stunning !
While I was walking in a bazaar, a Japanese woman spoke to me and we decided to have lunch together.
I also happened to meet an Indian guy who I met the previous day, so I asked him about a nice restaurant.

郵便局で葉書を投函した後、モティマグリへ。
丘の頂上にあるMaharana Pratapが有名ですが、私はロックガーデンからの景色の方により惹かれました。
美しい湖を見渡すことができ、絵のような景色なのです。

次に行ったのは、町中にあるジャグディーシュ寺院。
寺院の彫刻は非常に素晴らしいものでした！
バザールを歩いていると、一人の日本人女性に声をかけられ一緒に昼食をとることに。
前日に知り合ったインド人男性にも偶然会い、手頃なレストランを教えてもらいました。

The City Palace and Friendly People

The next morning, I checked out of the hotel and went to the station.
After checking-in my baggage at the baggage room of the station, I went to the City Palace.
He said that he was a friend of Lala whom I had met in this city two days ago.

He was a guide of the City Palace, so he let me joined in one of the Indian's tour groups, therefore I could listen to his guidance all the way.
While I had lunch with the guide, another friend of Lala came up and joined us.
Even though I felt sometimes they were too friendly and too passionate to the woman, all of them were nice people.
As a woman, traveling by myself was not always easy.
We have to learn how to avoid these kinds of troubles.

シティパレスとフレンドリーな人々

翌日、ホテルをチェックアウトし、駅に向かいました。
駅の手荷物預かり所に荷物を預けた後、シティパレスに向かいました。
中に入ると、一人のインド人が声をかけてきました。
彼はここの観光ガイドで、ララ（私がこの町で知り合ったインド人）の友人らしく、インド人観光客のグループと一緒に私にもずっと説明をしてくれました。
ラッキー！
このガイドさんとお昼を食べていると、ララの別の友人がやってきて私たちに合流。
時々、彼らが女性に対してフレンドリー過ぎ・情熱的すぎると思うこともありましたが、みんないい人たちでした。
女性が一人で旅をするのは、いつも快適なことばかりではありません。
こういう問題を避ける方法を学ぶ必要があるのでしょうね。

【Udaipur】Fascinating Miniature Paintings

The City Palace, where the Maharaja used to live, had a large number of fancy decorations.
I was especially fascinated by the miniature paintings.
While I was looking at the Lake Palace Hotel from outside, an Indian man came up and spoke to me.
He said he was working at a work shop of miniature paintings and that he could take me there if I wanted.
I was interested in miniature paintings, so I went with him.
They showed me how to paint, and I was able to enjoy it.
We also went to have dinner together.
However it was already past midnight when I came back to my hotel.
So the couple who owned the place were so upset with me.
I was sorry about it.

魅力的な細密画

マハラジャがかつて住んでいたというシティパレスは、多くの豪華な装飾があり、私は特に細密画に惹きつけられました。
外でレイクパレスを見ていると、一人のインド人男性が近づいてきて話しかけてきました。
彼が、細密画の工房で働いているので、よかったら案内してくれるとのこと。
細密画に興味があったので、一緒に行くことに。
絵を描いているところを見せてくれ、楽しめました。
夕飯にも一緒に行きましたが、ホテルに戻ったのが夜中12時過ぎで、ホテルのオーナー夫婦に怒られてしまいました。
反省！

【Udaipur】 The City of Lakes

Many Indian people were so kind to me on the train.
One Indian man tried really hard to speak to me in Hindi even if I didn't understand any of it.
Another Indian business man suggested that we have breakfast together and paid for me.
One Indian fellow guided me at the Saheliyon-ki-Bari (Courtyard of the Maidens).
I was so glad to have been able to meet nice people there.

Udaipur was known as the "City of Lakes".
It is absolutely an oasis in the desert.
I felt that water is so precious and it gives people peace and blessings.
There was the luxury Taj Lake Palace, but of course I stayed in a budget hotel cost 33Rs.(about 330yen per night).

I was surprised to find on the Internet that there was a hotel called Hotel Natural.
It seems to have been renovated or rebuild, and it looks much nicer than the one I've stayed.

湖の町

列車の中では、多くの人々に親切にしてもらいました。

一人のインド人のおじさんは、私には全く理解できないにもかかわらず、ヒンズー語で一生懸命話しかけてくれ、

別のインド人ビジネスマンは、朝食を一緒にどうかと言われて私の分まで支払をしてくれました。

噴水公園（侍女たちの公園）では親切にずっとガイドをしてくれた人もいました。

親切な人達に出会えて嬉しかった。

ウダイプルは、湖の町として知られています。

そこは、まさに砂漠のオアシス。

水は貴重で、人々に平安と恵みをもたらすものだと感じました。

そこには豪華なタージレイクパレスというホテルもありますが、私が宿泊したのはもちろん格安ホテル。

インターネットで、このホテルも発見してびっくりしました。

改築か改装をしたようで、私が宿泊したときよりは随分綺麗になっていますが。

A One Year Honeymoon

In the refreshment room, or cafe, at the Jodhpur station, I met a Japanese couple.
I had lunch with them.
They said that both of them had quit their jobs and were traveling the world.
It was their honeymoon and it would take a whole year.
A one year honeymoon.It's awesome!

I couldn't get a sleeping couch that night, so I had to go to Udaipur sitting on one of the train's regular seats.
I felt a pain in my hip because the seat was hard and I couldn't sleep at all.
Around midnight, a Indian man spoke to me, "There are sleeper berths available", he said and he could escort me if I wanted.
It was different from the sleeper class which I normally take, but it was heavenly that I could sleep while lying down.
I was deeply grateful to him!



1年間の新婚旅行

ジョードプルのリフレッシュメントルーム（カフェ）で日本人カップルに出会い、一緒に昼食をとることに。
彼らは、二人とも仕事を辞めて世界一周の旅をしているところなのだとか。
彼らにとってのハネムーンで、1年ほど旅をするのだそう。
1年間ものハネムーンとは！すごいなあ。

その夜は、寝台の席がとれなかったので、普通の座席に座ったままウダイプルに移動しなければならなかった。
シートが硬くておしりは痛いし、全く眠れない。
夜中に一人のインド人男性が話しかけてきて、寝台の席に空きがあるからよかったらこないかとのこと。
そこは、いつも私が利用する寝台とは別のクラスのようだったけれど、体を伸ばして眠れるのは天国！
彼に心より感謝しました。

He Had Changed So Much!

I left Jaisalmer and returned to Jodhpur.
After once again visiting the impressive Mehrangarh Fort, I met a Japanese man at the Jodhpur station.
He was an acquaintance whom I had met at the Narita airport and we had taken the same flight to India.
To my surprise, he was totally different from the person I knew.
He was wearing a kurta, a white ethnic Indian garment for men, and carried only a small bag, not a backpack like he formerly had.
He looked so tired, so I asked him what happened.

彼は別人のようでした！

ジャイサルメールを離れ、ジョードプルに戻りました。
印象的なメヘランガルフォートと再度訪れた後、ジョードプル駅で日本人男性と会いました。
私は彼とは成田空港で出会い、インドまで同じ飛行機に乗ったので、顔見知りでした。
驚いたことには、彼は私が知っている人物とは全く違っていました。
インド人男性が着るクルータと呼ばれる白い服を着て、かつてのバックパックではなく小さなバック一つしか持っていません。
とても疲れた様子だったので、何があったのか彼に尋ねました。

A Dangerous Night

He said that he met a friendly Indian man at the one of the tourist spots.
The Indian man seemed a nice person, so the Japanese guy decided to stay with him in the same hotel room.
When he woke up the next morning, the man had already disappeared and his belongings were gone.
He suspected that the food or drinks might have contained a sleeping drug that put him soundly to sleep.
Despite his bad luck, his passport was safe and he had traveler's checks to redeem.
He lost most of his luggage, but he still continued to travel.

Actually, I also sometimes had meals with local people and everything had gone well.
I wish there were some simple methods to find out if people are honest or not.

危険な夜

彼は、ある観光地でフレンドリーなインド人と出会ったことを話してくれました。
その人が感じのいい人に思えたので、その日本人男性は、その人と同じホテルの部屋に宿泊したそうです。
夕食を一緒に食べて楽しい時間を過ごしたのですが、朝起きてみると、そのインド人男性の姿は既になく、彼の持ち物が持ち去られていました。
彼は、夕飯の時に食べた食べ物か飲み物かに睡眠薬を入れられたせいで、ぐっすり眠ってしまったのではないかと疑っていました。
不運な出来事ではありましたが、パスポートは無事で、トラベラーズチェックも再発行してもらえたようです。
ほとんどの荷物はなくなってしまったものの、彼は旅を続けていました。

実のところ、私も知り合った地元の人と時々食事はしましたが、これまでのところは大丈夫。
その人がいい人なのかそうでないのか、簡単に見分ける方法があればいいのにと思います。

The Desert Scene

I'm sorry to say, I couldn't say that everything was terrific when reflecting on the camel safari in the desert.

I must say that, yes, I had many very valuable experiences.
I can't forget the beautiful sand dunes and amazing sunset.
There were the times when I caught sight of women clad in colorful saris walking while balancing big jars of water on their head.
I was surprised to see children polishing pots with sand instead of water.
During the trip I would worry that if someone killed me in the desert, isn't it that nobody would notice because I was traveling on the camel safari by myself?
Fortunately I did survive!
It was worth joining that tour!

砂漠の光景

実際のところ、砂漠でのらくだの旅の全てが最高だったとはいえません。
しかし、非常に貴重な経験をたくさんしました。
美しい砂丘や、素晴らしい夕陽を忘れることはできないし、
カラフルなサリーをまとった女性が、水の入った壺を頭にのせてバランスをとりながら歩いているのも時々みかけました。
子ども達が水の代わりに砂で鍋を洗っているのも驚きでした。

旅の間、砂漠でもし誰かに殺されたとしても誰にも気づかれないんじゃないかと不安にもなったこともありました。私は一人で参加していたわけだし。
幸運なことに私は今も生きてます！
らくだの旅には参加する価値があったことは確かです。

It Wasn't Free of Charge.

Over an open fire, he made a breakfast of toast , boiled eggs and chai (Indian style milk tea) .
The children who had come to us the night before showed up and sang again, for which they requested 10Rs from me.
I hadn't asked them for any performance, but I reluctantly paid them because, after all, I did enjoy it.
At every village we visited, children gathered around and asked me to give them something.
It was my third day on the camel safari, it was hot, I had a terrible case of diarrhea , and I was getting tired of everything.
"I need a rest in a quiet place!"

翌日、テレッサは近所の村からミルクをもらってきました。
彼は朝食に、たき火でトーストを焼き、ゆで卵とチャイを作りました。

昨夜やってきた子ども達がまたやってきて、歌を歌い、10ルピーを請求。
私が頼んで歌ってもらったわけじゃないけど、とりあえず楽しんだのも事実だしと思って、気が進まないながらもお金を払いました。

私達が訪れた町々で、子ども達が何かを要求してきます。
キャメルサファリも3日目で、熱いし、私は下痢もひどく、疲れ切っていました。
静かなところで休みたい！

Chicken Curry

We visited the small village where Teressa lived.
I had eaten only vegetable curry the past few days, so I thought it would be nice to have chicken.
After I said "yes", he pointed out a chicken running around the yard.
I hadn't expected that he would say that he was going to kill a chicken for me.
Immediately I changed my mind and said, "No".
It might be really fresh, but it made me lose my appetite.

At night, while we had dinner two boys came from the nearest village.
One of the children played an empty can just like a drum and sang, while the other boy danced.
I really enjoyed this unexpected performance in the desert.

チキンカレー

私たちは、テレッサの住む小さな村を訪れました。
彼は私にチキンカレーが食べたいかどうか聞いてきました。
このところ野菜カレーばかりだったので、チキンを食べるのもいいなあと思い、
「Yes」と答えましたが、その直後に彼は庭で歩き回っている鶏を見せたのでした。
私が食べるために鶏を殺すのだとは思っていなかったため、急いで「No」と答えを変更。
非常に新鮮だとは思いますが、食欲を失ってしまったので。

その夜、夕食を食べていると近所の村から二人の男の子がやってきました。
一人の男の子がドラムの代わりの空き缶をたたきながら歌を歌い、もう一人の男の子がダンスをしました。
私は、砂漠での思いがけない彼らのパフォーマンスを楽しみました。

The Replacement Camel Driver

The next day, an older man took the place of the young boy as camel driver.
He said the young boy had to go to school.

The old man's name was Teresa. He spoke only a little English, so I wondered how I could communicate with him.
We couldn't talk with each other, so we decided to take turns singing.
Sometimes when he saw something he would ask me what the word for it was in Japanese.
At first, I thought he was asking me about a dog, so I answered in Japanese " いぬ（inu).

The fact was that he had been asking me for "tree” when at the time there was a dog near by.
Whenever we saw trees and he said "犬” (inu) I was discreetly amused.
Sorry, Teressa!

キャメルドライバーの交代

翌日、キャメルドライバーは、若い男の子の代わりに年配の男性と交代しました。
少年は学校があるからとのこと。

年配の男性の名前はテレッサ。彼は英語がほとんど話せなかったので、どうやってコミュニケーションをとったらいいのかわからずにいました。
私たちはお互いに会話することが出来なかったので、交代で歌うことに。
彼はインドの歌を歌い、私は日本の歌を歌いました。

時々、彼は視界にはいってくるものを日本語で何というのか聞いてきました。
最初、私は彼が犬のことを言っているんだと思い、「犬（いぬ）」と日本語で答えましたが、次に「木」を見たときに、彼が「いぬ」というので驚きました。

実のところ、彼は「犬」ではなく、そばに生えていた「木」のことを聞きたかったようなのです。
私は、彼が木を見るたびに「犬」というのを聞いて、ひそかに楽しんでいました。
ごめんね、テレッサ！

Meals in the Desert

On a camel safari, the tour guide prepares meals for you.
He even made on the spot chapaties dough with flour and water.
It took time to get ready, so I felt it was a luxury to have such a meal in the desert.
On the other hand, I ate the same menu for lunch and supper.
After I had dinner with the guide, I slept with just a blanket on the sand under the starry sky.

砂漠の食事

キャメルサファリでは、ガイドさんが食事を用意してくれます。
彼は、野菜カレーとチャパティをたき火を使って作りました。
チャパティも、その場で小麦粉と水をこねて作るのです。
時間はかかりますが、砂漠でそんな風に食事を用意してもらえるのは贅沢なことだと思いました。
お昼も夜も同じメニューではありますが・・。
夕食の後、星空の下で砂の上で毛布にくるまって眠りにつきました。

House and Medicine in the Desert

The houses were built with plaster, but they looked clean and functional.
They had thick walls and small windows, so it was a bit dark inside, but people could live rather comfortably in the hot summer.

They asked me if I had some medicine for colds, but I just had some medicine I used when my stomach was upset.
They said they wanted any medicine at all, so I gave them some of my stomach medicine, explaining what it was for.
The camel driver boy had many siblings, it was a surprise that people could live in such a barren desert.

砂漠の家と薬

家はしっくいで作られていましたが、綺麗で機能的に見えました。
壁は厚く窓は小さいので、家の中は薄暗いのですが、夏の暑さの中でも過ごしやすいようです。

彼らは、私に風邪薬を持っていないか聞いてきましたが、その時私が持っていたのは整腸剤だけ。
どんな薬でもいいというので、お腹の薬だからと説明し、少しあげることにしました。
らくだ乗りの少年には兄弟姉妹が大勢おり、荒涼とした砂漠の中で人々が生活しているのは本当に驚きでした。

The Camel Safari Day1

On the next morning, when I went to the reception there was nobody there but me.
In the end, I was the only one who had signed up for that day's camel safari.
I expected some more tour mates, so at first I hesitated about going, but it can't be helped.

Around 10 a.m. I departed for the four day camel tour with an Indian boy who was the camel driver, and a camel.
The boy was 17 years old, and to my surprise, he really looked like my younger brother.
On the way, he stopped by a small village where there were just a few houses.
He said it was where he lived.

翌朝、レセプションに行くと、私の他には誰もいませんでした。
結局その日、キャメルツアーに参加したのは私一人だったのです。
他に何人か参加者がいることを期待していたので、最初はためらいましたが、どうしようもありません。

10時ごろ、私は、キャメルドライバーのインドの少年と、らくだ1頭とともに4日間のキャメルツアーに出発。
彼は17歳で、驚いたことに、彼の顔立ちは私の弟によく似ていました。
途中で彼は家が数軒あるだけの小さな村に立ち寄りました。
そこが彼の住む村だということでした。

Booking the Camel Safari

After checking into the hotel, I asked about the camel safari.
I asked the man at the reception if any other person would be joining tomorrow's camel safari.
He answered that there should be someone with me, so there would be no problems.
It was a three night, four day tour, and participants would spend the night in the desert under the stars.
I was so excited about the desert and traveling on a camel.
It should be a great experience!

キャメルツアーの予約

ホテルにチェックインした後、キャメルツアー（らくだの旅）について尋ねました。
受付の人に、明日他に誰か一緒に行く人がいるかどうか尋ねたところ、
他にもいるから大丈夫という答え。
3泊4日のツアーで、参加者は砂漠の星空の下で宿泊するのです。
私は、らくだの旅と砂漠をとても楽しみにしていました。
きっと素晴らしい経験となるはず！

Vigorous Children& Desert City

I departured from Jaipur and arrived in Jodhpur the next morning.
I had breakfast at a refreshment room (a cafe) at the station, then checked in my luggage and went sightseeing.
Jodhpur is called the Blue city because the walls of many houses are painted blue.

When I was waking, lots of elementary school kids came up to me and asked me " What's your name?", "What country do you come from?" and so on.
Some children asked me for my address and said they wanted to me write letters.
I was surprised that they were so vigorous.

活発なこども達

ジャイプールを出発し、翌朝ジョードプルに到着しました。
駅のリフレッシュメントルームで朝食を食べたあと、荷物を預けて観光に行きました。
ジョードプルは、多くの家の壁が青に塗られていることからブルーシティと呼ばれています。
歩いていると、たくさんの小学生が寄ってきて「名前はなんていうの？」「どこの国から来たの？」などとと質問攻めに。
何人かの子ども達は、手紙を書きたいから住所を教えてくれと言ってきました。
彼らの活発さにはびっくり！




Mehrangarh Fort is the main tourist spot in Jodhpur.

It was a magnificent building on the hill but unfortunately I don't remember the details.
I left Jodhpur on the same day that I arrived, and then went to Jaisalmer by night train.
Jaisalmer is located in the middle of the Thar desert (great Indian desert) and is called the Golden City.
I wanted to come here to see the desert.
The camel tour is one of the biggest tourist attraction in this city, and I also wanted to try it.

砂漠の町

メヘランゲル・フォートはジョードプルの主な観光スポットです。
丘の上に建つ非常に壮大な建物ですが、残念なことにあまり詳しいことを覚えていません。

ジョードプルに着いた同じ日に、夜行列車でジャイサルメールに向かいました。
町はタール砂漠（グレートインディアン砂漠）の中ごろに位置し、ゴールデンシティとも呼ばれています。
私は砂漠を見たくてこの町に来ました。
ラクダツアーは、この町の観光の目玉の一つ。私も挑戦してみたいと思っていました。

Hawa Mahal

Jaipur is the state capital of Rajasthan and well-known as "The Pink City".
That's because many of the architectural sites were built of red and pink sandstone.
Hawa Mahal, which means "Palace of Winds", is also pink and is the most famous landmark of Jaipur.
Originally it was built so the royal ladies could observe everyday life in the street below without being seen.
It was very impressive to see, but the most memorable thing was to meet very friendly Indian people there.
Zedy and his brother took me not only to tourist spots but also to a post office, bank and local residence.
I wanted to write a letter to him after going back to Japan, so I asked his address, but he said he could'nt write any English.
It was very surprised, because he spoke much better English than me.
He said he learned English just by talking to foreign travelers.
I suppose that we Japanese should also learn from them.



ハワーマハル

ジャイプールはラジャスターン地方の州都で、ピンクシティとしてよく知られています。
ピンク色の赤砂岩で建物が作られているため、そう呼ばれているようです。
ハワーマハルの意味は「風の宮殿」で、ジャイプールのシンボルでもあります。
元々は、宮殿に住む女性達が、他の人に見られることなく、町の様子を見るためのものだったようです。

とても印象深い建物でしたが、それ以上に思い出に残ったのがとてもフレンドリーな人達との出会いでした。
ゼディと彼の兄弟は、観光スポットだけではなく、郵便局や銀行、一般の人々の住まいにも連れていってくれました。
日本に帰ってから手紙を書きたかったので、住所を聞いたのですが、英語が書けないとのこと。
彼らは私などよりもずっと英語が上手に話せたので、これを聞いて本当にびっくりしました。
英語は、外国人観光客と話すことで覚えたそうです。
日本人もこの英語習得法を見習うべきかもしれませんね。

Visiting House

On the next day, I was with them again.
They said they would prepare an Indian-style breakfast, and they bought some kind of cookies or fries from a outside food stall.
They warned me that I shouldn't eat the filling because it might be too spicy for me to eat.

Then Zedy's brother Abraham took me to see his house.
He introduced me his big families .
His children were so cute, some of them changed their clothes for taking a photo.
His wife let me taste their lunch.
I hadn't expected that I would get a chance of visiting a native Indian's house.
I was so lucky to have had such a great opportunity!

お宅訪問

翌日、私はまた彼らと一緒に過ごしました。
彼らは、インド式の朝食を用意するといってくれ、屋台でクッキーやフライのようなものを買ってきてくれました。
中身は辛すぎるから食べない方がいいといわれましたが。

そして、ゼディのお兄さんのアブラハムは、彼の自宅に連れていき
家族を紹介してくれました。
子ども達はとても可愛らしく、何人かは写真撮影のために着替えも。
彼の奥さんにはランチを味見させてもらいました。
地元のインド人家族の家を訪問できるとは思っていなかったので、
こんな素晴らしい機会が得られたことは非常にラッキーでした！

Monkey Temple and Two Indian Names

I met an Indian guy named Zedy onthe day I arrived in Jodhpur.
Zedy was learning Japanese, and took me to the jewel workshop which his brother owned.

That day we had breakfast and lunch with him, his brother and his friends.
He gave me a ride on a motor scooter to the Monkey Temple.
He also gave me an Indian woman's name, Shabnam.He said the meaning was "dewdrops."
I like that name very much, and actually I met many women with the same name during this trip.
It's quite a popular name in India

His friend insisted that Chandra was the more suitable name for me than Shabnam.
He said it meant "moonlight".
In Hindu mythology, Chandra is the god of the moon.

I like both names, but it's a bit strange that they called me by different names.

モンキーテンプル ＆　二つのインド名

ジョードプルに着いた日、私はゼディという青年に会いました。
彼は日本語を勉強しており、彼のお兄さんが経営している宝石工場を見学させてくれました。
私はその日、彼や彼のお兄さん、彼の友達と一緒に朝食＆昼食。
彼はスクーターでモンキーテンプル（猿寺）にも連れていってくれました。
また、私にシャブナムというインド人女性の名前をつけてくれ、意味は朝露だと教えてくれました。
その名前を気に入りましたが、インド旅行中たくさんのシャブナムに遭遇。
インドではとても人気のある名前だったようです。

また、彼の友人は、シャブナムよりチャンドラがいいと主張。
名前の意味は月の光。ヒンズーの神話では、チャンドラは月の神のようです。

私はどちらの名前も気に入りましたが、二人が私をバラバラの名前で呼ぶのはちょっと妙でした。

Elephant Taxi

I met a Japanese girl at the retiring room in Jaipur Station.
She was a college student and her major was Hindi.
She said it was her third time visiting India.
I envied her because she could converse with local people in their own language.

We went to the City Palace and Amber Fort together.
The fort is located in a mountainous area, and tourists can enjoy riding an elephant to the top.
Of course, we also took a ride. It was quite interesting.


象のタクシー

ジャイプル駅のリタイアリングルームで、一人の日本人女性と会いました。
彼女は大学生で、専攻はヒンズー語。
インドに来たのは3回目だと言っていました。
地元の人達と現地の言葉で会話ができるというのは羨ましかったな。

私達は一緒にシティパレスとアンベール城に行きました。
アンベール城は丘の上にあり、観光客は象に乗って上までいくことができます。
私たちももちろん乗りましたが、とても面白い体験でした。

Souvenir Shop

Next day, I went to the Taj Mahal again,because I thought it might be my last chance ever.
Then I stopped by a souvenir shop near the hotel and bought some small gifts for my family like a marble chessboard, and a jewelry box.
I asked them to send them to Japan, but I would never see them again.
I think they didn't send them to me after all.
I've heard that sometimes this happens in this country.
I should have brought them to the post office myself.

The shop owner also suggested that I have made some jewelry with my own design.
He said he could have it ready for me before my departure, but in the end I couldn't get it when I left.
It was hard to believe that more time was needed to finish.
Fortunately, one of Japanese backpackers who was supposed to stay a couple days longer than me promised that he would get the jewelry and would send it to me after he got back to Japan.
Actually he did send it to me, but I was shocked to see it.
Even though I used small diamonds and black opal in the design, it looked like just a toy!


土産物屋

翌日、またタージマハルを見に行きました。きっとこれが人生最後のチャンスだろうと思ったからです。
そして、ホテルの近くにあった土産物屋に立ち寄り、大理石のチェスボードや宝石箱を購入。
それを日本に送ってくれるように頼みましたが、私がそれを見ることは二度とありませんでした。
結局送ってくれなかったんでしょうね。この国ではそういうことが度々おこると聞いていたし。
自分で郵便局に持ち込めばよかった・・。

土産物屋の主人は、自分でデザインをしたジュエリーを作ることも勧めてきました。私が出発するまでに出来上がると言っていたのに、結局受け取れず。
出来上がるまでもう少し時間がかかるなんて信じらない。
幸いなことに、一人の日本人バックパッカーが私より何日か長くそこに滞在する予定だったので、代わりに受け取って日本についたら送ってくれると言ってくれました。
実際に彼は送ってくれたのですが、実物をみてびっくり。
小さなダイアモンドとオパールを使ってデザインしたジュエリーだったのに、まるでおもちゃでした！

Agra Fort

Agra Fort is located 2.5km northwest of the Taj Mahal.
Shah Jahan built the fascinating Taji Mahal for his wife over 20 years after she passed away.
He also planned to build the Black Taj Mahal for himself but that dream didn't come true.
He was imprisoned by his son in the Agra Fort in the last part of life gazing at the Taj Mahal from the balcony of the building.
It was a sad story.

I saw the man who spoke to me the day before.
He was with some of his friends and they looked like a gang members.
I was relieved that I hadn't gone to his party that day.

アグラフォート

アグラフォートは、タージマハルの北西2.5Kmのところにあります。
シャージャハンは、妻が亡くなった後、20年もの年月をかけて彼女のために美しいタージマハールを建てました。
彼は自分のためにも黒いタージマハルを建設する予定でいましたが、その夢はかないませんでした。
彼は人生の最後をこの城で息子に幽閉され,ここにある建物のベランダからタージマハルも見ながら暮らしたそうです。悲しいお話ですよね。

この城で、前日に私に話しかけてきた男性をみかけました。
彼は何人かの友人と一緒でしたが、みるからにギャングのようでした。
あの日彼のパーティに行かなくて本当によかった！

Taj Mahal

I went to see the Taj Mahal at about 6:30 in the morning.
t was an absolutely breathtaking view, enhanced by the fresh air of early morning.
It was worth it to come all the way from Japan!

On the way back to the Agra Fort, an Indian man spoke to me and said he could give me a ride on his bike.
I wasn't sure that it was such a good idea, but he offered so kindly that I decided to accept the ride.
I thought I could get away from him in case of bike, if something went wrong.
He said "After visiting Agra Fort, why don't you come to my house? You could be my wife."
Is that an Indian style joke?



タージマハル

朝6時半頃、タージマハルに行きました。
朝早い新鮮な空気の中で見るタージマハルはとりわけ素晴らしかった。
はるばる日本から来たかいがありました！

アグラフォートまで行く途中、一人のインド人が自転車の後ろに乗らないかと声をかけてきました。
乗っていいものかわかりませんでしたが、親切に提案してくれるので乗せてもらうことに。
もし何か起きたとしても、自転車からなら逃げられるだとうと思ったし。
彼は「アグラフォートに行った後、私の家に行きましょう。私の妻になったほうがいい。」と言うのでした。
インド式のジョーク?

Everyday is Birthday

I spent two nights at Delhi, then headed to Agra which is famous for the Taj Mahal.
When walking to the hotel, a young Indian man came up and spoke to me.
He said he was learning Japanese and wanted to learn from me.
As it was his birthday, he said he'd like to invite me to his birthday party.
He seemed nice, so I promised him I would go.

After checking into the hotel, I was wondering what kind of present I could give to him.
I had a Swiss army knife, so I thought that would be nice.

When I was about to go, the hotel manager asked me where I was off to.
He listened to my story and took a look at the man who was waiting for me in front of the hotel.
He said, "You shouldn't go with him. He was a gang member. Everyday is his birthday."

毎日が誕生日

デリーで二晩過ごした後、タージマハルで有名なアグラに向かいました。
ホテルまでの道を歩いていると、若いインド人男性が話しかけてきました。
彼は、日本語を勉強しているので私に教えて欲しいと言い、
そして、今日は自分の誕生日なので、パーティにこないかと誘ってきました。
彼はいい人のように見えたので、行くことを約束。

ホテルにチェックインした後、何をプレゼントに持っていこうか迷い、
スイスアーミーナイフがいいだろうと考えました。

ホテルを出ようとしたときに、ホテルのマネージャーがどこに行くのか聞いてきたので事情を話すと、ホテルの前で待っている男性を見て、
「行かない方がいい。彼はギャングの一味だし、毎日今日が自分の誕生日だと言っているんだから。」と言ったのでした。

New and Old

That night I went on to Delhi by sleeper car and arrived at about 11:00 the next morning.
After having checked into a guest house in Old Delhi, I took a walk about both parts of the city.
New Delhi is totally opposite from Old Delhi. It is well planned, has broader roads and is more quiet.
On my way back from the National Museum, I took up the challenge of riding a public bus.
While I was looking about wondering how I was supposed to pay my bus fare, an elderly man pointed out to me the fare collector.
It was really surprising that though when I paid my fare he didn't have the right change, later he came back and gave me 50 paisa, which was about five yen at the prevailing exchange rate.
Since I had some bad　experience before, I was so impressed to see such an honest man here in India!

新＆旧

その夜、寝台車でデリーまで移動し、翌朝11時ごろに到着しました。
デリーは、オールドデリーと、ニューデリーに分かれています。
オールドデリーのゲストハウスの一つにチェックインした後、両方の町を散策しました。
ニューデリーは、オールドデリーとは全くの対極にあります。街はよく整備され、道路も広いく、そして静か。
国立博物館からの帰り道、公共のバスに乗ることに挑戦してみました。
いつ誰に料金を払ったらいいのかわからずにきょろきょろしていると、年配の乗客が、あの人だよと教えてくれました。
一番驚いたのは、私がお金を払う時に、その人がおつりをもっていなかったので、後で50パイサ（当時の日本円で約5円）私に持ってきてくれたことです。
嫌な経験をいろいろした後だったので、インドにもこんなに正直な人がいるんだと感激しました！

Morning Boat Trip

I woke up early next morning and took a boat trip on the Ganges river.
Varanasi is the most sacred place for Hindus.
The Ganges in Varanasi is believed to have the power to wash away sins and give salvation and freedom from the cycle of birth and re-birth.

So many people come to the Ganges river, not only seeking the spiritual, but also some come to wash their clothes or brush their teeth.
There were some dead bodies being cremated at the Ghats, and other dead bodies just washed away.
They were selling a bottle of water form the Ganges as a souvenir, but I didn't want to buy.

Anyway, seeing the sunrise from the boat is wonderful!


朝のボートツアー

翌朝早起きして、ガンジス川のボートに乗りました。
バラナシはヒンズー教とにとって、一番の聖地。
バラナシのガンジス川では、罪が洗い清められ、輪廻からの解脱が得られると考えられています。

多くの人がガンジス川にやってきます。精神的なものを求めるだけでなく、衣服を洗ったり、歯を磨く人も。
ガートで火葬にされる死体もあれば、ただ川に流されるだけのものもあります。
ガンジス川の水をボトルに入れてお土産として売っていましたが、私は買う気になれませんでした。

ともかく、ボートから見る日の出は素晴らしかったです!

Nikujaga(meat and potatoes)

It was a great relief to stay at the Kumiko House.
The owners of this guest house were a Japanese woman named Kumiko and her Indian husband.
Many Japanese travelers had been staying there like a woman who had been traveling for more than two years, a young Buddhist monk, some college students and some unemployed people.
There were some rules in this guest house such as a curfew after sunset, and telling them your destination when you go out .
That means it might not be so safe to stay this area.
Actually, there were a couple of posters about missing travelers.
Kumiko prepared typical Japanese food like steamed rice, miso soup and Mikujyga for our supper, and I was delighted to have them!
Nikujyaga is one of the Japanese people's favorite dishes.

肉じゃが

久美子ハウスでは非常に安心して滞在できました。
このゲストハウスのオーナーは、久美子さんという日本人女性と、夫のインド人男性。
たくさんの日本人が滞在していました。2年以上も旅を続けている女性や、若いお坊さん、大学生、プータロー（無職の人）など。
そこには日没後の外出禁止、外出するときには必ず行先を言ってから出かけるなどいくつかのルールがありました。
それだけ、あまり安全ではない地域だということなんでしょうね。
実際に、行方不明の旅行者のポスターが何枚か貼ってありました。

久美子さんは夕食にごはんや、味噌汁、肉じゃがといった和食を用意してくれて感激！

肉じゃがは、日本人の大好きな料理の一つです。

Kumiko House

I was not at all comfortable staying at that hostel, so I thought it was better to leave.
I wanted to avoid any more troubles with rickshaw-men, so I tried to get there by foot.
However, all sorts of people came up and spoke to me like rickshaw-men, people trying to sell something, people trying to take me to another hotel or souvenir shop.
They wouldn't leave me alone and it was so hot to walk with a heavy backpack.
I was at wits end about everything in India at that time.
When I took a rest sitting on the ghats for a while, an Australian couple spoke to me and offered to take me to Kumiko House.
They really saved me!

久美子ハウス

そのホステルはあまりにも居心地がよくなかったので、離れることに。
翌朝、日本人バックパッカーの間では有名な久美子ハウスに向かいました。
リクシャーマンとのトラブルを避けるため、徒歩で移動。
しかし、リクシャーマンや、物売り、ホテルや土産物屋の客引きなど、いろんな人々が次々にやってきては話しかけてきます。
少しもほっといてくれないし、重いバックパッカーをかついで歩くには暑すぎる。
あの時は、インドの全てのものに疲れ果てていました。

ガートで休んでいると、オーストラリア人のカップルが話しかけてきて、一緒に久美子ハウスまで行ってくれました。
冷たいコーラまでいただき、本当に彼らに救われました！

Silk Factory

After I checked in, the manager of the hostel said that he'd like to take me to a silk factory.
I told him that I could not afford to buy any silk, but he said,
"You can just see how silk is made. I think you'll find it quite interesting.
Besides, it's very close by."

So alright, I went there with him because I had wanted to take a walk about the city anyway, and I would go to the factory just as a sight seeing trip.
However, they were determined to sell me something one way or another.
It was such a hassle just to get out without buying!

シルク工場

チェックイン後、ホステルのマネージャーがシルク工場に案内すると言ってきました。
私は絹（シルク）なんて買う余裕がないと言いましたが、「どうやって絹布を作るのか見るだけでもきっと面白いと思うよ。ここから近いところだし。」
と言います。

結局、私は彼と一緒に出掛けることにしました。どっちにしろ町を散歩しようと思っていたので、観光だと考えればいいかと思ったからです。
しかし、彼らはなんとかして買わせようと必死。
何も買わずにそこを脱出するのは本当に大変でした！

Rickshaw Men

The train arrived at Varanasi around 11:00 a.m.
As usual, a couple of rickshaw drivers immediately approached me.
I had a guest house in mind but somehow the rickshaw man tried to take me to another hostel.
It's obvious he would be getting a kickback from the hostel.
I was too tired to negotiate with him, so I gave up and decided to try the hostel to which wanted to take me.
As far as that goes the hostel was mentioned in my guide book, so certainly it should be alright.

リクシャーマン

列車はベナレスに午前11時ごろに到着しました。
即座に何人かのリクシャーマンがいつものように近づいてきました。
私は行きたいと思っていたゲストハウスがあったのですが、彼はなんとかして別のホステルに連れていこうとします。
きっとそのホステルからリベートをもらっているんでしょうね。

交渉するのにも疲れてしまって、彼がいうホステルに行ってみることに。
私の持っていたガイドブックにも一応のっているし、きっと大丈夫だろうと思って。

Banana Peel // Feb 25, 1990

Next morning, I was wakened by an Indian women in her mid 40's who was in the same compartment.
She was with her kid who was about six years old.
The train stopped at a station and she showed me to the tap water which I could use to brush my teeth.
She also gave me Chai, chapati which is an Indian flat bread, curry flavored nuts and a banana.
I was very thankful for her kindness.

After I ate the banana, she gestured that I should throw the banana peel out the train window.
When I hesitated, she urged me to do it.
"When in Rome, do as the Romans do."
I threw it out and then a cow immediately came and ate it.
There were cows on the railroad track.
It was just amazing!

翌朝、同じコンパートメントだった40代のインドの女性に起こされました。
彼女は6歳ぐらいの男の子と一緒に列車に乗っていました。
列車は駅に停車しており、彼女は歯を磨くために水道まで案内してくれたのです。
他にも彼女からはチャイやチャパティ、カレー風味のナッツやバナナなどをご馳走になってしまいました。
親切にしていただいて本当にありがとう！

私がバナナを食べ終わると、彼女が皮を列車の窓から外に捨てるようにゼスチャーをしました。
ためらっていると、やはり捨てろという仕草をします。
”郷に入っては郷に従え。”
私が窓から皮を捨てると、すぐに牛が近づいてきて食べてしまいました。
ひゃ～、線路の上に牛？
びっくりです！

Ladies Coach

While traveling in India, the most annoying thing was the begging.
I've heard that "Giving money to beggars just encourages them to keep living that way."
I think that's true.
In order to get more money from their begging they would even cut off their own legs.
It's so sad".

Hawrah Station was much bigger than I expected.
I was worried about finding the right train.
I asked people again and again for confirmation and finally I got on board.
My reservation was for a sleeper car on the coach limited to women only.
I spent 15 hours getting to Varanasi.

女性専用車

インドを旅する時に、一番悩まさせられるのが物乞いです。
「物乞いにお金をあげることは、彼らのそういう生き方を助長するだけである。」
と聞いたことがあるけど、その通りだと思います。
彼らは、より多くのお金を恵んでもらうために、自分の足を切り落としてしまうことすらあるそう。
悲しすぎる！

ハウラー駅は思っていたより大きく、
ちゃんと目的の電車に乗れるのか心配で、何人かの人に何度も確認し、ようやく乗り込むことができました。
私が予約を入れたのは寝台の女性専用車です。
ベナレスまで15時間をそこで過ごしました。

India Beggars and Begging Scams: What You Should Know

Racetrack // Feb 24, 1990

The following morning, I was very nervous when I went out walking by myself.
It was because I was aware that everybody on the street was looked at me so curiously.
Don't stare at me like that! I'm not a panda or a clown!

On my way back to the hotel, one of Balic's friends came up and spoke to me.
Since he was having chai with Balic , I joined them for a while.
They suggested that we go to the racetrack together.
I had never been to a racetrack before in Japan, but I thought it might be interesting to see the Indian version of a racetrack.
When we arrived, I didn't see any horses there.
Where in the world were the horses?

競馬場

翌朝、一人で散歩をしていてとても緊張しました。
路上にいる人達が,みんな好奇の眼差しで私を見るからです。
「お願いだからじろじろ見ないで！私はパンダでもピエロでもないわよ！」

ホテルに戻る途中、バリックの友人の一人に声をかけられました。
バリックと一緒にお茶しているところだったので、しばらく一緒に時間を過ごしました。
一緒に競馬場に行かないかと誘われ、日本でさえ行ったことがないのにもかかわらず行くことに。
インド版の競馬場を見るのも面白いかと思えたので。
行ってみると、馬の姿はどこにも見えません。
馬は一体どこ？？

Hawrah Station

They explained to me that the actual horse race was held at another venue.
Even though this was indeed a race track, you only listen to a remote broadcast.
I had expected to see the horses running, so I was a bit disappointed.
However, as it was a new experience for me, I did enjoy myself.

Afterwards I went back to my room at the hotel and prepared for my departure.
I was supposed to take a train heading to Benares in the evening,
Around Hawrah Station, it was absolutely chaotic!
So many people were living on the street, some of them were lying down, and some kids were running around naked.
And some people came up to me to beg.

彼らは、競馬は別の場所で開催されているんだと説明してくれました。
レース場があるのに、実況中継が聞こえるだけだったのです。
馬が走っているところを見たかったので、ちょっとがっかりでしたが、
こういうところに来るのも初めての体験だったので、それなりに楽しみました。

ホテルの部屋に戻って、出発の準備。
その晩、ベナレスに向けて列車で移動することになっていたからです。
ハウラー駅の周辺は全くのカオス（混沌）状態でした。
多くの人々が路上で生活しており、寝ている人、裸で走り回っている子ども達も。
そして、何人かの人達が近づいてきて物乞いをしてきました。

The memories of song & pictures

The chai was harmless.
I survived!

Balic's Japanese was really good.
It was impressive to listen to him sing the songs of popular Japanese singers "Toshinobu Kubota".

It was his dream to go to Japan one day, that's probably why he was so kind to Japanese people.

I went out sightseeing with him on a rickshaw and he guided me around the city,
I was fascinated by everything I saw, so I took many photos.
Balic said, "It's best that you not take photos.
Because if you do, you or your friends might be satisfied with just looking at the photos.
However, India changes everyday.
By the time you get back to Japan the pictures will already be things of the past.
Please come to India every year and see it with your own eyes.

チャイに怪しいところはありませんでした。
生きのびられてよかった～！

バリックは日本語がペラペラで、
久保田利伸の歌もびっくりするほど上手。
いつかは日本に行きたいという夢をもっており、それで日本人に親切なのでしょうね。

彼とリクシャーで観光にでかけ、町を案内してもらいました。
私は見るもの全てに興味津々で、写真をバシバシ撮っていたら、
バリックが、「写真は撮らない方がいいよ。
写真をとってしまうと、あなたやあなたの友達は、その写真を見ただけで満足してしまう。
でもインドは毎日変化している。
あなたが日本に戻ったころには、写真はもう過去のものだ。
毎年インドに来て、自分の目でまたインドを見てほしい。」

Train Ticket

His words moved me, but I didn't know when I could come back again, so I took several more photos.

After all, I spent all day with him, his friends and his brothers.
We had lunch, visited Victoria Memorial Park by subway, and had some beers at night.
Balic also helped me to buy a train ticket to Banares at the Rail Reservation Office.
I was a complete stranger there, so his guidance was very valuable.
I think travel is fun not just because of sightseeing or enjoying local foods.
The most interesting part is conversing with other travelers or local people.

彼の言葉は心に響きましたが、次にここに来れるのはいつかわからないので、更に何枚か写真を撮りました。

結局、この日は1日、彼と、彼の友人や兄弟と一緒に過ごしました。
ランチを食べ、地下鉄でビクトリアメモリアルパークに行き、夜はビールで乾杯。
バリックは、列車予約オフィスでベナレスまでの列車の切符を買うのを手伝ってもくれました。
全く知らない土地でなにもかもよくわからないので、彼のガイドはとてもありがたかったな。
旅の楽しみは、観光やその土地の食べ物を味わうだけでなく、一番面白いのは他の旅行者やその土地の人達と会話を交わすことではないかと思ってます。

Chai // Feb 23, 1990

It was a single room, so they spread out some mats on the floor for the five us to sleep.
The price for the room was one fifth of the regular fee. By the exchange rate at that time it was about 300 yen(=30Rs, 3USD).
Such a cheap price, it was quite the lark.
The next morning, four of the Japanese girls left, but I decided to stay one more night at the same hotel.
The Indian man who had introduced us to this hotel last night was named "Balic".( I'm not sure how he spelled his name though.)
In the morning he brought me some Chai, a very sweet Indian tea, but I was anxious about whether or not it was safe to drink it.
I had heard stories that there were tourists who had their drinks spiked with sleeping pills and that all their luggage was taken away.
Even if he seemed like a good man, I knew I should be careful about it.
Finally, after giving it much thought, I took just a sip.

それはシングルルームだったので、部屋にマットを敷いてもらいそこに5人で寝ました。
値段は通常の料金の1/5。当時のレート換算で約300円。面白かったし、格安！

翌日、4人組の日本人女性達は出発していったけれど、私はもう一晩同じ宿に宿泊することに決めました。
昨夜このホテルを紹介してくれたインド人男性の名前はバリック。（スペルは不確かですが・・）
彼は、朝、チャイ（とても甘いインドのコーヒー）を部屋に運んでくれましたが、
それを飲んでも大丈夫なのかどうかまだ不安でした。
観光客が睡眠薬入りの飲み物を提供されて、荷物をとられてしまうという話をよく聞いていたからです。
彼はいい人に見えるけれど、やはり気をつけておかないと。
いろいろ考えた末、一口だけ飲むことにしたのでした。

Arrived in India! // Feb 22, 1990

At last, the day of my flight to India had come.
I went to Hualamphong Station by tukutuku, or auto rickshaw, and then took a public bus to the Don Mueng Airport.
Riding in the various vehicles here was an adventure.
At the airport in Calcutta, I met a group of four Japanese girls.
They were from Osaka, and hadn't yet decided upon a hostel in which to stay the night.
Night had already fallen, so I made up my mind to stay at the same hostel as the girls.

We took just a step out of the airport and were immediately approached by many people trying to direct us to their taxis. It was a little scary, and I felt relieved that I was not alone.
The scenes I saw on the way downtown were just like something from a movie. I felt like I had fallen into a completely different world.

インドに到着！

ついにインドに飛び立つ日が来ました。
ファランポーン駅までは、トゥクトゥク（オートリキシャ）で、その後はバスでドンムアン空港へ。
いろんな乗り物に乗るのも、ここでは冒険です。
コルカタ（カルカッタ）の空港で、日本人4人組の女性のグループに会いました。
彼女達は大阪から来ており、まだ今夜の宿を決めていないとのこと。
外は既に真っ暗だったので、私も彼女達と同じ宿に一晩宿泊することに。

空港を一歩出ると客引きのタクシーがワラワラと寄ってきて、ちょっと怖かった。一人じゃなくて本当によかったと思いました。
町までの道で見た光景は、まるで映画のようで、全くの別世界に来てしまったような感覚に陥りました。

Sudder Street

We planned to stay at one of the guest houses on Sudder Street (a famous area for backpackers in Calcutta).

We picked out a couple hostels from our guide book, but unfortunately, they were all booked out.
While we spoke about where we were going to stay, one Indian man approached us.
He told us that his friend ran a hotel, and that we could stay there if we wanted.
Normally, it's too risky to get involved in such a story, but one Japanese man was with him, and told us about how he was a good man, so we didn't need to worry about it.
He said he had also stayed at that hotel.
We had to stay somewhere, so we decided to stay there, provided that all five of us were staying in the same room.

私達はサダルストリート（有名なカルカッタの安宿が集まる場所）のゲストハウスに宿泊しようと思って、ガイドブックからいくつか目星をつけていましたが、残念なことにどこも満室。
どこに泊まろうか相談していると、一人のインド人が近づいてきました。

彼の友人がホテルを経営しているので、そこに泊まらないかと言ってきたのです。
普通に考えて、そういう話は非常に危険なのですが、彼と一緒にいた日本人男性が、彼はいい人だから大丈夫というし、彼もそのホテルに泊まっているとのこと。

とにかく寝る場所を確保しなければならなかったので、5人一緒の部屋に泊まることを条件に、そこでの宿泊を決めました。

Thai Food

One of the things that I looked forward to during my stay in Thailand was food!
I had an interest in ethnic foods, so I thought I'd try eating typical Thai food from a food stall.
I was very curious to try a red curry called "Keang phet", a dish that was not yet well known in Japan at that time.
It was a sort of soup served with steamed rice, of a red color and extremely spicy.
It was completely different from a Japanese curry.
Perhaps, it wasn't meant to be a breakfast food.

The spiciness wasn't going away anytime soon, so I gave up on trying other Thai food and had lunch at McDonald's instead.

タイの滞在で楽しみにしていたことの一つは、食べ物！
エスニックフードに興味があったので、典型的なタイフードを屋台で食べてみたいと思っていました。
興味津々で「ケーン・ペッ（ト）」と呼ばれるレッドカレーに挑戦。当時、まだ日本には馴染みがなかった料理です。
ご飯と一緒に出てきましたが、それはスープのようで、色は赤。そして非常に辛い。
口の中が火事状態！
日本のカレーとは、全く違うんですね・・。
おそらく、それは朝食には向いていなかったかも。

その辛さはなかなか消えず、他のタイフードを試すのをあきらめて、
代わりにマクドナルドでお昼を食べたのでした。

Kaosan Road // Feb 21, 1990

Next day, I moved to a guest house to save some money.
At first, I had planned to stay in Kao San Road, a world famous hub for backpackers, but I gave up before I found the place.
I got lost easily and it was too hot to be walking around.
Anyway, after checking into another guest house, I went out sightseeing.
I enjoyed visiting Wat Phrakeaw which was absolutely gorgeous, then I took a break at a park near the river.
While I was sitting on a bench, a local man came up and spoke to me saying "My son works at Ajinomoto ( a popular Japanese company), and my grandson loves Doraemon (a popular Japanese anime character).
It was surprising to hear his story, because my Japanese guidebook said " Be careful of someone who speaks to you about "Ajinomoto" and "Doraemon".


カオサンロード ＜1990年2月21日＞

翌日、出費を抑えるためにゲストハウスに移りました。
最初は、世界中からバックパッカーが集まるカオサンロードに宿泊するつもりでいましたが、その場所を見つける前に断念。
私はあっという間に道に迷ってしまい、暑くてもう歩き回る気にならなかったからです。

とにかく、ゲストハウスの一つにチェックインした後、観光へ。
ワットプラケオ（王宮）は、素晴らしく豪華。しばし堪能した後、川のそばの公園で一休み。
ベンチに座っていると、地元の男性が声をかけてきて、「息子は’味の素’で働いていて、孫はドラえもんが大好きなんだ」と言います。
それを聞いてびっくり。私が持参したガイドブックには「’味の素’と’ドラえもん’の話をする地元の人には気をつけろ」と書いてあったからです！

The man continued saying "There is a temple on the other side of the river.
If you want to go, I'll take you by my friend's boat at a cheap price."
It's exactly the same story that I read in my Japanese guide book!
It calls attention to the trouble that there are some people who offer a trip on a river, and when they reach the middle of the river, they push you into the water to steal your valuables or all your belongings.
I don't want to drown here!
I haven't even arrived in India yet .
Therefore, I rejected his offer and went back to the guest house, wishing I could get to India safely.



その男性は「川の反対側に寺があって、観光客が大勢行きます。
もし行きたいのなら、私の友人の船で安く連れて行ってあげるよ。」と話をつづけました。

何ですって？ガイドブックに書いてあることと同じことを言ってる！
それは、ボートトリップを持ちかけてくる人の中には、川の真ん中までボートで行って、貴重品や全ての持ち物を奪うために観光客を突き落す人もいるから気をつけろという内容だったのです。

冗談じゃない！こんなところで沈みたくないよ～。
まだインドにたどり着きさえしていないのに！

そんなわけで、彼の提案を断り、無事にインドにたどり着けるように願いつつ、ゲストハウスに戻ったのでした。

My First Day in Bangkok // Feb. 20, 1990

It was the middle of the night when I arrived at Bangkok Airport.
The first thing I had to do was to decide on a hotel for the night.
At the airport I was able to come up with a reasonable hotel that was located downtown, and so I headed off there in a taxi shared with other tourists.
Even though it was around midnight, the streets were bustling with crowds of people. I was overwhelmed by the atmosphere of my first foreign country.
When I arrived at the hotel, there were many young local girls in the lobby.
I had to wonder, would it be possible that I could travel alone in this unfamiliar place?
Somehow, I passed the night there, but with a very uncomfortable feeling.

バンコク1日目 ＜1990年2月20日＞

バンコク空港に着いたのは、夜中でした。
まず最初にしなければならなかったのが、その日泊まるホテルを決めること。
空港で手頃な宿を見つけた後、乗り合いタクシーで他のツーリストとともに街中のホテルへ。
夜中だというのに、町は多くの人で賑わっており、初めての異国の雰囲気に圧倒されそうになりました。
ホテルに着いた時、ロビーには地元の若い女性がたくさん。
私は、この知らない土地で本当に一人で旅をすることができるんだろうか？
なんだか落ち着かない気分で一夜を過ごしました。
